Three European Airlines Launch Direct Flights to Australia in 2026
In an exciting development for international travel, three European airlines—British Airways, Finnair, and Turkish Airlines—plan to commence direct flights to Australia in 2026. This marks the first time in 14 years that European carriers will operate direct services to Australia, significantly changing the travel landscape between these regions.
Currently, many passengers traveling between Europe and Australia rely on connecting flights, primarily through carriers such as Emirates, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, and Cathay Pacific. On the Australian side, Qantas offers nonstop and one-stop options, while only two European airlines currently provide services with stops en route. The addition of these three airlines will enhance options for travelers looking to fly directly from Europe to Australia.
Finnair Takes the Lead with Daily Flights
In a notable move, Finnair will initiate its Australia route beginning on October 25, 2026. The airline plans to operate daily flights from Helsinki to Melbourne, with a stop in Bangkok. This route is expected to utilize the Airbus A350-900, configuring both 278 and 321 seat layouts to accommodate demand.
Finnair’s decision to operate daily flights instead of the customary three times a week reflects its ambition to tap into the growing travel market. The airline aims to attract passengers not only from Finland but also from surrounding regions, including the Baltics and Scandinavia. Additionally, the flights will serve as a link for travelers connecting to various destinations within Australia and New Zealand through its partnership with Qantas.
The operational schedule for the inaugural flights is as follows:
– Helsinki to Bangkok: 00:10 – 16:30
– Bangkok to Melbourne: 18:15 – 07:15 (+1)
– Melbourne to Bangkok: 15:35 – 20:45
– Bangkok to Helsinki: 22:30 – 06:05 (+1)
Turkish Airlines Expands Its Reach
Meanwhile, Turkish Airlines has plans to enhance its service offerings in Australia. The airline first launched its Australian routes in March 2024, with flights from Istanbul to Melbourne via Singapore, operating three times a week. In November 2024, it added a route from Istanbul to Sydney via Kuala Lumpur, which runs five times a week, further solidifying its presence in the region.
The introduction of nonstop flights to Australia will enable Turkish Airlines to provide a more competitive option for travelers, as many currently endure two-stop connections. The airline’s use of the Airbus A350-900 on these routes is part of its strategy to cater to the increasing demand for travel between Europe and Australia.
British Airways Maintains a Strong Presence
British Airways continues to operate its daily flights from London Heathrow to Sydney via Singapore. This long-standing service utilizes fifth freedom traffic rights, allowing the airline to offer a seamless connection for passengers traveling between these major cities.
While Finnair and Turkish Airlines expand into the Australian market, British Airways remains a reliable option for travelers. The airline’s use of different aircraft models throughout the year enables it to manage capacity effectively, adjusting to seasonal demand. In the northern winter, it employs the 254-seat 777-300ER, transitioning to the 216-seat 787-9 during the northern summer.
As these three European airlines prepare to establish direct services to Australia, travelers can look forward to increased competition and more options for long-haul flights. This development not only enhances connectivity between Europe and Australia but also signals a resurgence in international travel as demand continues to rebound.
