The U.S. Department of Justice has confirmed the dismantling of a covert network allegedly directed by the Russian government to target dissidents and opponents. The operation led to the arrest of Denis Alimov in Colombia, who faces serious charges, including conspiracy to commit murder and kidnapping.

According to the official announcement from the U.S. Department of Justice, Alimov was apprehended on an Interpol red notice. He is accused of plotting the abduction or assassination of two prominent dissidents abroad, as well as engaging in related terrorist activities. U.S. authorities plan to seek his extradition from Colombia.

The indictment highlights Alimov’s discussion with Darko Đurović, a citizen of Montenegro and Serbia, who reportedly participated in the conspiracy. In October 2024, Alimov allegedly arranged a meeting with Đurović at a restaurant near the headquarters of a foreign intelligence agency. During this meeting, he is accused of providing Đurović with approximately $60,000 to fund the operation, with an additional $1.5 million promised for each successful assassination or kidnapping.

Investigators noted that Alimov and Đurović communicated using Google Translate due to a language barrier, and their conversations were monitored by U.S. authorities who had details of their discussions. The indictment describes Đurović as an active participant in the conspiracy, revealing that he researched Glock handguns while planning travel to locate one of the targets. He allegedly traveled to another European country to find a second target and recruited an additional accomplice, discussing the need to “finance a hunting team” to track their victims.

The charges against Alimov include conspiracy to commit murder and kidnapping in a foreign country, conspiracy and attempt to provide material support to terrorists, as well as financing terrorism. The potential penalties for these offenses range from 15 to 20 years in prison, with the possibility of life imprisonment for conspiracy to commit murder and kidnapping.

U.S. authorities have commended the FBI’s New York office for its counterintelligence efforts, along with the Counterintelligence and Espionage Section and international operations, citing successful collaboration with partner institutions in Colombia. This operation underscores the ongoing global challenges posed by state-sponsored espionage and targeted violence against dissidents.
