MLB Preseason Predictions: Eyeing Record-Setting Performances in 2026
The start of the 2026 Major League Baseball (MLB) season has sparked conversations about potential record-breaking performances from star players. As the excitement builds, notable names such as Shohei Ohtani and Aaron Judge are poised to redefine the limits of achievement on the diamond. Baseball, with its intricate statistics, offers fans a unique lens to evaluate player performances and project future successes.
Ohtani’s Quest for a Historic Season
The spotlight is firmly on Shohei Ohtani, who is aiming for an extraordinary season. Following his record-setting 50/50 performance in 2024, Ohtani’s ambition is to achieve both 50 home runs and 20 wins in 2026. This feat would position him as a legendary figure in baseball history. In context, only 53 players have ever hit at least 50 home runs in a season, and the second-highest stolen base total among those is just 24.
While Ohtani’s determination is commendable, challenges remain. The Los Angeles Dodgers are likely to limit his pitching appearances to about once a week, potentially capping his starts at 26. Even so, historical examples exist where pitchers have achieved remarkable win totals in fewer starts, such as Clayton Kershaw, who won 21 games in 2014 with just 27 starts. Ohtani’s performance will depend heavily on his run support and consistency on the mound.
Despite Ohtani’s capabilities, experts predict that reaching 20 wins may not be realistic this season. Andrew Friedman, Dodgers president of baseball operations, acknowledges Ohtani’s focused approach, but winning 20 games will be a steep challenge.
Judge Aims for a Triple Crown
Another player with high expectations is Aaron Judge, who is hoping to surpass his previous achievements. Judge, who turns 34 in April, is coming off a season in which he led the American League (AL) with a batting average of .331 and hit 62 home runs in 2022. He seeks to add a fifth season with over 50 home runs to his accolades and potentially capture the elusive Triple Crown.
While Judge’s performance is impressive, the competition is fierce. Cal Raleigh and Bobby Witt Jr. are among those vying for top honors in home runs and batting average. Achieving 63 home runs would require Judge to raise his game significantly, as it surpasses his total from last year.
Critics argue that while a Triple Crown is possible, it remains a formidable challenge, with history showing that only Miguel Cabrera has achieved this feat since 1967.
Emerging Stars and New Records
The 2026 season is also expected to spotlight emerging talent like Bobby Witt Jr. and Paul Skenes. Witt, who had 88 extra-base hits in 2024, is aiming to break Alex Rodriguez’s record for most extra-base hits by a shortstop. His potential for a breakout season is bolstered by changes to the dimensions at Kauffman Stadium, which could enhance his power-hitting capabilities.
Meanwhile, Paul Skenes is on track to maintain a sub-2.00 ERA for a third consecutive season. Only two pitchers have achieved this in three different seasons since the end of the dead ball era. Skenes’ consistency on the mound, combined with his impressive strikeout rate, positions him as a frontrunner for pitching accolades.
Another player to watch is Juan Soto, who nearly achieved a 40/40 season last year with 43 home runs and 38 stolen bases. Soto’s determination to secure an MVP Award could drive him to achieve this milestone in 2026, further solidifying his status as one of the game’s elite players.
Lastly, Mason Miller is generating buzz for his potential to allow a batting average under .100. While historical precedents exist for dominant pitching, achieving this mark would require a combination of skill and favorable circumstances.
As the MLB season unfolds, fans will be eager to see if these athletes can turn their ambitious goals into reality. The stage is set for thrilling performances that could reshape baseball history.
