A woman from Jersey, Rosie Hill, has successfully completed an extraordinary cycling journey spanning 24 countries from France to Japan. This ambitious expedition began in early June 2024 and took nearly 20 months to complete. Hill’s journey has not only transformed her views on travel but also prompted her to reflect on issues related to freedom and opportunity.

Before embarking on her adventure, Hill had been living in France for four years, working in organic farming. The idea for her trip emerged after she was inspired by friends who frequently cycled. She recognized cycling as an eco-friendly means to explore and connect with the environment. Leaving the south of France, she cycled through diverse landscapes and cultures, ultimately reaching Taiwan, her final stop, before heading to Japan.

Insights from the Journey

During her travels, Hill experienced a significant cultural shift, particularly upon entering Turkey from Eastern Europe. She noted that while countries like Bulgaria felt “very empty” due to declining populations, Turkey was a vibrant contrast filled with bustling markets and street vendors. Her experiences highlighted the stark differences in cultural customs and societal norms across regions.

In Taiwan, Hill has taken on a new role, teaching English to children aged six to seventeen. She described her initial experience as challenging but rewarding. The lessons vary from basic vocabulary to more complex topics, such as distinguishing between metaphors and similes. Hill expressed that teaching grammatical rules presents unique challenges, particularly because native speakers often learn these rules through exposure rather than formal instruction.

Hill’s time alone on the road has also led her to deeper self-reflection. She remarked on the privileges of freedom, noting that in some countries she traversed, women do not enjoy the same opportunities. “Some countries I’ve been travelling through, it’s just not the same… especially for women,” she said.

Future Possibilities

Initially, Hill thought her journey would conclude upon arriving in Taiwan. However, her perspective has shifted, and she now contemplates the possibility of continuing her travels. “I’m thinking, will it continue again? I don’t know yet,” she admitted.

Hill’s journey serves as a testament to resilience and the power of exploration. Her reflections on the varying degrees of freedom experienced by women in different countries underline the importance of awareness and appreciation for the opportunities available in her own life. As she continues to navigate her new role as an educator in Taiwan, her journey remains a source of inspiration and insight.
