Doctor Urges Daily Calcium Pill to Combat Osteoporosis Crisis
Recent research has revealed a significant decline in calcium intake among the UK population, raising alarms over a potential osteoporosis crisis. According to the Health and Food Supplements Information Service (HSIS), calcium consumption has plummeted by a staggering 20% over the last two decades. The report, titled “Decades Of Decline: Health And Wellbeing Impacts Of Falling Nutrient Intakes,” highlights the urgent need for increased awareness about bone health.
Calcium plays a vital role in maintaining strong bones and teeth, as well as supporting vascular and muscle function, cell signalling, and hormone secretion. Despite its importance, many young people are not meeting recommended dietary levels. Dr. Emma Derbyshire, a public health nutritionist at HSIS, noted, “Bone density is accrued in youth, so calcium intakes are particularly important in these life stages.” Alarmingly, 15% of adolescents aged 11 to 18 are consuming less calcium than the Lower Reference Nutrient Intake (LRNI), with the figure rising to 20% among girls and young women in the same age group.
Dr. Derbyshire also reported a worrying trend for women aged 19 to 64, where the percentage failing to meet calcium targets has climbed from 6% to 11% in recent years. This decline in calcium intake poses significant long-term health risks, particularly in light of estimates that healthcare costs for hip fractures alone reach £5 million daily.
Understanding the Risks of Low Calcium Intake
The consequences of inadequate calcium consumption can be severe. Women over the age of 45 are likely to spend more hospital days due to osteoporosis than for diabetes, heart attacks, or breast cancer. Furthermore, an average of 1,150 people die each month following a hip fracture, underscoring the gravity of the situation.
Dr. Derbyshire emphasizes that while it is ideal for individuals to obtain necessary nutrients from their diet, the reality is that many are falling short. To address the potential “bone health ticking time bomb,” she recommends considering a multivitamin and multimineral supplement that includes calcium and vitamin D, which can be found for as little as 3p per pill.
In addition to calcium, the decline in other essential nutrients is alarming. For example, vitamin D deficiency has increased since 2008, with one in five individuals in the UK lacking this critical nutrient. Other nutrients, such as magnesium, which also contribute to bone development, are also in short supply in many diets.
Practical Steps to Improve Bone Health
To combat poor bone health, Dr. Derbyshire offers several practical recommendations:
1. **Start the Day with Fortified Cereal**: Consuming a calcium-fortified cereal with milk or a plant-based alternative can provide an immediate calcium boost.
2. **Incorporate Calcium-Rich Foods**: Include foods such as cheddar cheese, cow’s milk, plain yogurt, calcium-fortified plant alternatives, tofu, and leafy greens like kale.
3. **Eat Tinned Fish with Bones**: Sardines, pilchards, or tinned salmon with bones can be excellent sources of calcium. Crushing the soft bones can make them easier to consume.
4. **Engage in Weight-Bearing Activities**: Regular physical activity, such as walking, running, cycling, or aerobics for at least 30 minutes five times a week, promotes strong bone development.
The decline in calcium intake among the UK population is a pressing issue that requires immediate attention. By adopting dietary changes and considering supplementation, individuals can take proactive steps to protect their bone health for the future.
