Senator Ayo Arise Backs President’s Intervention in Rivers Politics
Senator Ayo Arise has publicly supported President Bola Tinubu‘s recent intervention in the political unrest unfolding in Rivers State. Arise emphasized that the president acted to prevent the situation from escalating into chaos, underscoring the need for leadership during turbulent times.
In an interview, Arise stated that the circumstances in Rivers State warranted presidential involvement. He remarked, “If the place becomes ungovernable, and people live in fear, the president would have shirked his responsibility if he did not take the action that he took.” He further illustrated the gravity of the situation by comparing it to a battle between two powerful entities, asserting that it would be irresponsible for the president to remain passive.
Arise highlighted the political significance of Nyesom Wike, the Federal Capital Territory Minister, asserting that he remains a pivotal figure in Rivers State politics despite ongoing controversies. He noted, “There is no way you can push aside somebody like Wike when it comes to politics in Rivers State. He has built a political structure that is still very influential.” According to Arise, any political leader aiming to govern effectively in the region must acknowledge Wike’s substantial influence.
The senator articulated that Governor Siminalayi Fubara cannot afford to overlook Wike’s role if he seeks to solidify his authority in the state. He cautioned, “If you don’t give him that respect, you may find yourself on the wrong side of politics.” This highlights the intricate dynamics of political power in Rivers, where established figures hold significant sway.
National Implications of Local Instability
Arise portrayed President Tinubu’s intervention as a stabilizing force, essential for maintaining order within the state. He reiterated the idea that the unrest in Rivers could have broader implications for national governance. “When a state as strategic as Rivers becomes unstable, the ripple effects spread across the country. It affects the economy, the security situation, and even the confidence of investors,” he explained.
The senator insisted that presidential intervention is not merely a discretionary action but a constitutional obligation. He stated, “The president has the responsibility to safeguard the stability of the entire nation, and that is why his intervention is justified.” This assertion underscores the interconnectedness of state and national governance in Nigeria, where local crises can reverberate throughout the country.
While acknowledging the divisions caused by the political crisis, Arise expressed hope for reconciliation. He described Nigerian politics as inherently transactional, stating, “Politics is about settlement; people must settle and find a way to continue.” He predicted that, despite current animosities, political actors would eventually come together, reflecting the cyclical nature of political relationships.
Arise’s comments come at a critical time in Nigeria’s political landscape, where tensions in key states like Rivers can significantly influence national stability. His support for the president’s decisive action underscores the importance of strong leadership in navigating complex political challenges.
As the situation develops, the focus will remain on how these interventions will shape the political future of Rivers State and, by extension, the broader national context.
