Guterres Calls on Nigeria to Lead Africa’s Global Influence

The Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, has urged Nigeria to take a leadership role in Africa’s efforts to reshape the global order. During a high-level bilateral meeting with Vice President Kashim Shettima at the 39th African Union (AU) Summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Guterres highlighted Nigeria’s unique position to guide the continent towards increased global influence.

Guterres acknowledged the economic reforms implemented by President Bola Tinubu’s administration, commending Nigeria’s proactive leadership in stabilizing the Sahel and ECOWAS regions, despite ongoing security challenges within the country. He emphasized that Nigeria’s demographic strength, commitment to democracy, abundant natural resources, and dedication to multilateralism equip it with a strategic advantage in shaping Africa’s future role on the global stage.

“Given Nigeria’s demographic strength, democratic continuity and deep resource base, the country stands a real chance of leading Africa to becoming the next superpower in the evolving global architecture,” Guterres stated during the meeting. The discussion focused on enhancing collaboration between Nigeria and the UN in areas such as global economic growth, peace and security, sustainable development, and coordinated humanitarian responses across Africa.

Vice President Shettima expressed gratitude to Guterres for his efforts in promoting global peace. He reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to multilateral engagement and emphasized the need for comprehensive reform of the United Nations system to reflect the changing dynamics of global governance. Shettima argued that Africa deserves stronger representation in decision-making structures, declaring that Nigeria merits a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council.

Both leaders committed to deepening their cooperation, with Guterres reiterating the UN’s support for Nigeria’s reform agenda and its expanding role in fostering peace, security, and development throughout the continent.
