Rivers State Introduces Health Insurance for Tertiary Students
The Rivers State Contributory Health Protection Programme (RIVCHPP) has announced its initiative to implement health insurance schemes within tertiary institutions throughout Rivers State, Nigeria. During an advocacy visit to the Rivers State Ministry of Education in Port Harcourt, RIVCHPP Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Vetty Agala, outlined plans to engage educational institutions and commence student enrolment in the state’s health insurance programme.
Dr. Agala emphasized the necessity of including students in the push for universal health coverage in Rivers State. She stated that access to healthcare should not be hindered by financial constraints, highlighting the importance of ensuring that students, regardless of their economic background, have the opportunity to receive adequate health services.
To further this goal, RIVCHPP has initiated discussions with the Nigeria Association of Proprietors of Private Secondary Schools to achieve comprehensive inclusion of students from both public and private educational institutions. Dr. Agala praised the Ministry of Education for its policies aimed at enhancing educational outcomes, noting that these efforts align with Governor Siminalayi Fubara‘s commitment to improving education and social welfare in the state.
Collaboration with Educational Institutions
Dr. Agala reassured the Ministry of RIVCHPP’s commitment to efficient service delivery and encouraged schools to adopt the Student Social Health Insurance Package, specifically designed for learners. This initiative aims to create a supportive environment for students, ensuring they have access to necessary healthcare services.
In response, Dr. Azibaolanari Uzoma-Nwogu, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, expressed her support for the programme. She pledged to disseminate information regarding the health insurance scheme to public schools and facilitate awareness campaigns about the benefits of enrolling in the programme. Dr. Uzoma-Nwogu urged RIVCHPP to remain proactive and consistent in delivering affordable and quality healthcare services to the residents of Rivers State.
The collaboration between RIVCHPP and the Ministry of Education marks a significant step towards enhancing the health and well-being of students in the region. By prioritizing health insurance in educational institutions, Rivers State aims to set a precedent for other regions, ensuring that financial difficulties do not impede access to healthcare for students. This initiative not only reflects a commitment to public health but also underscores the importance of education in fostering a healthier future for all.
