Jovana Vuković, a member of the Executive Board of the Socijaldemocratic Party (SDP), has condemned recent statements made by Dragan Bojović, a representative from the Democratic People’s Party (DNP). Vuković argues that Bojović’s comments regarding the Montenegrin language and education represent a form of political manipulation aimed at deflecting attention from governmental responsibilities concerning the environmental crisis in Botun and Pljevlja.

Vuković responded to Bojović’s assertion that naming subjects such as “Montenegrin/Serbian, Bosnian, Croatian Language and Literature” constitutes a severe form of discrimination and an attempt at “violent assimilation.” She emphasized that teaching children the official language of the country they reside in is a basic requirement of any sovereign and democratic state.

Claims of Manipulation

Vuković criticized Bojović’s claims as nothing more than a deliberate provocation. She stated, “Attempts to portray the Montenegrin language as a threat are a direct assault on the constitutional order and sovereignty of Montenegro, packaged under the guise of concern for children.” Vuković accused Bojović of continuing an ideological battle against the state, leveraging language as a weapon in this ongoing conflict.

Such narratives, according to Vuković, serve as a smokescreen for the environmental disaster in Pljevlja and distract from the pressing need for accountability in addressing real issues facing the nation.

Addressing the Language Debate

The discourse surrounding the Montenegrin language has become increasingly contentious. Vuković argued that the language is not a subject for debate but rather a constitutional reality that cannot be erased. She underscored that the manipulations employed by Bojović and similar figures will not obscure the truth or prevent citizens from demanding accountability and concrete solutions to the nation’s challenges.

Vuković’s remarks highlight a broader struggle in Montenegro regarding identity, governance, and the pressing environmental concerns affecting communities. As discussions continue, the implications of these language debates for the future of Montenegro’s political landscape remain significant.
