Nemanja Nikolic has rejoined Buducnost, marking a significant return to the Montenegrin club where he aims to help revive its fortunes after a challenging start to the season. The 30-year-old forward previously played under the club’s current sporting director, Nenad Maslovar, and coach Miodrag Bozovic, forming a familiar trio as they work together to boost the team’s performance, which currently sees them languishing in seventh place, eleven points behind leaders Sutjeska.

Nikolic began his career at Grbalj, where he first came into contact with Maslovar. His transfer to Rostov was facilitated by Bozovic, setting the stage for their reunion as Nikolic takes on the responsibility of leading Buducnost’s attack. During the winter transfer window, securing an experienced striker was a top priority for the club, and Nikolic’s arrival is seen as a crucial step in addressing their recent struggles.

As Buducnost prepares for its upcoming matches in Spain, Nikolic has already made an impact, assisting in a 1-0 victory against South Korea’s Incheon. He expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance, stating, “It was a nice match and a good win for our confidence. I’m glad I got minutes and could contribute to the team. The assist came from good teamwork and understanding on the field, and it’s important that we looked compact and that our game plan is visible.”

The significance of returning to Buducnost is not lost on Nikolic, who acknowledged the personal connection he has with Maslovar and Bozovic. “I’m really happy to be working with them again, as we know what to expect from each other. They played a significant role in my early career, and I hope to close that circle successfully,” he stated after a recovery training session, reflecting on the first eleven days of preparation on the Iberian Peninsula.

Nikolic quickly adapted to his new surroundings, noting the positive atmosphere within the squad. “The team welcomed me really well from day one. There are many good guys here, and the atmosphere is healthy. I played with Neskovic at Vojvodina, and now we are here together, but overall, I integrated quickly because everyone is focused and respectful,” he said. The forward joined Buducnost from Buriram United in Thailand, adding international experience to the squad.

As the team counts down to its final days of training in Spain, Buducnost has faced opponents including Philadelphia, Halmstad, and Incheon, with one more match against Egersund scheduled for Sunday. Nikolic is optimistic about the preparations, remarking, “Training is going really well. We are working seriously, and the intensity is high, which is normal for this period. Each game has brought something new, and we see progress from match to match.”

With the spring season on the horizon, Buducnost aims to improve its standing after a disappointing autumn campaign. Nikolic emphasized the need for collective ambition, stating, “Of course, I would love to score as many goals as possible and assist my teammates, but I put all that in service of the results. The biggest club in Montenegro must aim for the highest goals. Our current position in the standings should motivate us to give even more than our maximum and bring joy to all the fans.”

Buducnost’s next challenge will be against Sutjeska on February 21, 2024, a pivotal match that could define the team’s trajectory for the remainder of the season. As Nikolic and his teammates prepare for this crucial encounter, the focus remains on teamwork and a shared commitment to achieving success.
