Jersey-based golfer Adam Dalton has achieved a significant milestone in his career by being selected for Team Europe at the upcoming Cairns Cup. This prestigious event will take place from July 11 to July 17, 2024, at the renowned San Roque Golf Club in Spain, where top adaptive golfers from Europe and the USA will compete in a highly anticipated matchplay format.

Dalton expressed his surprise and excitement upon receiving the news. “I’m as shocked as anyone honestly. This came as a huge surprise, and it still doesn’t feel real,” he said. “I’m just so excited to get the team kit on, go out there and compete.” As the third installment of the Cairns Cup, this year’s competition aims to elevate the profile of adaptive golf and inspire players with disabilities.

A Dream Opportunity

The invitation came directly from Kris Aves, the captain of Team Europe, who initially discussed the event during a meeting in Portugal earlier this year. Dalton had planned to attend as a supporter before being asked to join the team as a player. “At first, I thought it was a prank. I didn’t even know I was on the shortlist,” he recalled. After a unanimous vote, Dalton secured his place on the team, marking a pivotal moment in his golfing journey.

The Cairns Cup was established in memory of Billy Cairns, a team member who tragically passed away shortly after arriving in Florida for the inaugural event in 2018. His legacy continues to inspire the competition, which seeks to promote excellence in adaptive golf and encourage more individuals with disabilities to pursue the sport.

Inspiration and Aspiration

Dalton’s personal motto, “no hands, no limits,” reflects his commitment to using his platform to inspire others. “I really hope that being a part of this event will help inspire as many people as possible to chase their dreams, whatever they are,” he said. He believes that showcasing his achievements can demonstrate what is possible in the realm of adaptive sports.

Being selected for such a significant competition has bolstered Dalton’s confidence. “Being selected for an event of this stature is a great sign that my career is starting to gain traction,” he noted. “To be selected unanimously is definitely a confidence booster.” Dalton, who has faced self-doubt in recent times, sees this opportunity as validation of his hard work and talent.

As he prepares to compete, Dalton looks forward to playing alongside some of the world’s best adaptive golfers, many of whom are also friends from his time on the tour. He is eager to forge new connections, especially with players from the USA, as he hopes to participate in events across the Atlantic in the future.

With the Cairns Cup approaching, Dalton remains focused on his performance but also emphasizes the importance of enjoying the experience. “To be a part of Team Europe is a huge honour for me, but I don’t feel accomplished yet. There’s always something to achieve,” he stated. “I’m just going to go over there and enjoy it. Of course, I want to do well and concentrate, but I just want to enjoy the moment.”

As he takes this next step in his golfing career, Dalton is actively seeking sponsorship opportunities. Those interested in supporting his journey can contact his manager, Sarah Arora, at [email protected].
