Serbia’s Handball Team Eyes Quarterfinals After Thrilling Wins
The Serbian women’s handball team, known as the “lavice,” has taken a significant step toward securing a place in the quarterfinals of the World Championship. Their recent victory against Iceland, with a score of 36-27, followed by a narrow triumph over Spain, 31-29, has put them in a strong position for advancement. As they prepare for their crucial final match in the main round against Serbia this Saturday, the team understands that their fate now rests firmly in their own hands.
In a post-match statement, team captain Nina Bulatović expressed pride in her teammates and the effort they demonstrated against Iceland. “This victory came after our loss to Spain, where we struggled to find our rhythm throughout the game. Today, we adhered to our agreement to give everything we had on the court, and that commitment paid off,” she said. The team’s performance was particularly notable, with Dijana Trivić shining by scoring seven goals without a miss, playing the full 60 minutes.
Reflecting on their prior defeat, Trivić mentioned that the team held a meeting to address their approach. “After the loss to Spain, we discussed our warm-up and game strategy. We focused on bringing the energy that defines us, celebrating every defensive stop and goal in a way that would frustrate our opponents. We demonstrated that tonight and earned a well-deserved win,” she stated.
Looking ahead, the team faces a challenging match against Germany on March 15, 2024, at 18:00. Trivić anticipates a tough contest against the host nation but remains confident in the team’s preparation. “I expect an exciting and challenging match. As I said, we have come together, and we know what we need to do,” she added.
With their eyes set on the quarterfinals, the Serbian team is determined to build on their recent successes. Their upcoming performance could ultimately determine who advances to the next stage of the tournament, emphasizing the importance of teamwork and strategy as they continue their campaign in the World Championship.
