Serbia’s Presidential Election: Is Ivica Dačić a Viable Candidate?

Speculation is mounting in Serbia regarding potential candidates for the upcoming presidential election, with Ivica Dačić emerging as a noteworthy contender. President Aleksandar Vučić recently hinted at a few individuals who could succeed him, although he did not disclose any names. While the presidential elections are typically scheduled for spring 2027, the exact date remains unclear, as Vučić has suggested the possibility of earlier elections.

Initially, Vučić indicated he might shorten his term and hold elections at the end of this year alongside parliamentary elections. However, his latest remarks suggest parliamentary elections could occur before December, while the decision regarding the presidential elections will depend on whether they take place this year or next. In this context, Dačić, the leader of the Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS), may be considered as a potential candidate, particularly given his extensive political experience.

Predrag Marković, the SPS vice president, has noted that Dačić’s political acumen makes him a strong candidate. He emphasized that Dačić’s connection with ordinary citizens and his resilience against political attacks solidify his support among the populace. Marković stated, “Dačić is a politician with the most experience in the country. No one from the political elite is as close to the common people as he is.”

Concerns about health issues have been raised regarding Dačić’s candidacy. Dušan Vučićević, a political science professor, expressed skepticism about Dačić’s potential due to his health problems. However, Đorđe Vukadinović, editor of Nova Srpska Politička Misao, argued that if Dačić’s health permits, he could be an advantageous choice for Vučić. Vukadinović pointed out that such a move would solidify Dačić’s and the SPS’s allegiance to Vučić, making it unlikely for them to pursue independent political ambitions.

Vukadinović elaborated that Dačić enjoys solid support among the ruling Serbian Progressive Party’s base, which may facilitate his candidacy. Despite not being the same vibrant figure he once was, Dačić’s extensive political experience could prove invaluable. He is regarded as a non-confrontational figure, which could be beneficial in the current international climate.

Political analyst Zoran Lutovac suggested that Dačić might serve as an effective “sacrificial goat” for the regime, allowing Vučić to avoid potential backlash. Lutovac stated, “This regime needs a candidate who will stoically accept defeat, and Dačić has honed that skill over the years.” He noted that the current political environment does not suggest any change in the electoral conditions that might allow for a fair election.

Historically, the SPS has supported Vučić’s candidacy in both the 2017 and 2022 elections. Dačić last ran for the presidency in 2012, where he received over half a million votes. As the political landscape evolves, the dynamics leading up to the next presidential election will be closely observed, particularly regarding Dačić’s potential candidacy and the implications for both the SPS and Vučić’s administration.

As Serbia prepares for what could be a pivotal election, the interplay between political alliances and public sentiment will be crucial in shaping the future leadership of the country.
