England’s head coach Sarina Wiegman emphasized the need for her team to perform at their best as they prepare to face Iceland in a crucial World Cup Qualifier on March 30, 2024. The match will take place at the City Ground in Nottingham, marking the second qualifying game for the Lionesses following a resounding victory against Ukraine.

In their first qualifier on Tuesday, England showcased their attacking prowess with a dominant 6-1 win in Antalya. Key players Alessia Russo, Georgia Stanway, and Jess Park each scored two goals, setting a positive tone for the campaign. Wiegman is keenly aware of the challenge posed by Iceland, stating, “I think a very strong test. They are very disciplined and physical, direct with a lot of pace. Tough to beat and we think we will have the ball a lot but hard to break down the defense.”

Wiegman noted that while much focus is on the upcoming rematch against Spain next month, her thoughts remain firmly on Iceland. “We are not talking about Spain, we are only talking about Iceland,” she reiterated. The coach acknowledged the Icelandic team’s capabilities, highlighting their dangerous attacking style and resilience.

Alessia Russo, reflecting on the team’s current form, expressed confidence in the squad’s mentality. Following her performance against Ukraine, she has now scored 29 goals for England. “Everyone’s in a good place, confident and people are loving playing for England,” Russo remarked. Her enthusiasm is shared across the team, as they prepare to build on their early success.

Park, who also made a significant contribution with two goals against Ukraine, has had an impressive season overall. She has netted 11 goals for both club and country across all competitions. Russo praised her teammate, stating, “She’s had an incredible season both at club and internationally… as you grow and Sarina instils the freedom and confidence, you see that coming out massively.”

Unfortunately, England will be without defender Alex Greenwood, who has been ruled out due to a minor muscle injury sustained prior to the previous match. Wiegman confirmed, “Unfortunately, Alex didn’t make it. She has a minor muscle injury. She was desperate to go out last Tuesday and also tomorrow. We all tried to make it work but it’s just too early and not worth the risk.”

As the Lionesses prepare to take on Iceland, they are determined to continue their strong start in the qualifiers. With a blend of confidence and awareness of the challenges ahead, England aims to secure another victory and maintain momentum as they head into the next stage of their qualifying campaign.
