Montenegro’s Political Landscape Shifts Amid Markovic Dispute

Political tensions in Montenegro are escalating as public figures exchange criticisms regarding a recent split within the Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS). Ranko Đonović, a publicist and analyst, emphasized the need for cooperation among opposition members, particularly in light of ongoing protests against the current government led by Danijel Živković.

Đonović expressed optimism about upcoming gatherings, stating that they would represent not just the DPS but also the broader vision of a “European Montenegro,” similar to the aspirations of the Liberal Alliance of Montenegro from 35 years ago. “Montenegro has the potential and energy for such a European perspective,” he said. Yet, he cautioned against allowing “petty political tricksters,” referring to Dritan Abazović, Milojko Spajić, and Aleksa Bečić, to manipulate the country’s future.

In recent statements, Živković announced that the DPS would expand its efforts beyond institutional resistance against the current regime. He mentioned preparations for organizing protest rallies across Montenegro. “The protest meetings held in the aftermath of the last elections were fairly good, but they certainly could have been much better,” he noted, leaving room for speculation about the effectiveness of future demonstrations.

Đonović’s remarks came in response to a public dispute between former Prime Minister Duško Marković and Živković, which he described as largely unclear to the Montenegrin public. “At least the valid reason for this split is unknown,” he remarked, indicating confusion surrounding the motivations behind their fallout. He pointed out that personal pride and stubbornness often cause the most harm to those who possess them.

Reflecting on the long-standing nature of Montenegrin politics, he questioned whether nearly four decades of political involvement should not suffice for reconciliation. “The rule is confirmed, especially in Montenegro, that politics is a sure way to turn former friends into enemies,” he added.

Đonović concluded by suggesting that both parties would benefit from halting their public exchanges, thereby preventing past friendships from deteriorating into enmity that could further destabilize the political landscape. He remarked, “The best solution for both sides is to stop here, leaving no room for former friendship to turn into outright hostility that would please both their enemies and those opposed to Montenegro.”

In a recent press conference, Živković also addressed Marković’s attempts to clear his conscience regarding his past affiliation with the DPS, claiming that Marković is trying to distance himself from his former party. This statement came amid allegations that Abazović’s government had the backing of the DPS for signing the Fundamental Agreement with the Serbian Orthodox Church. Marković confirmed this, stating, “Dritan Abazović signed the Fundamental Agreement because the DPS enabled it,” reiterating that the DPS’s support was crucial for Abazović’s minority government.

As Montenegro navigates these complex political dynamics, the coming weeks will be pivotal in determining how these relationships evolve and whether the opposition can effectively mobilize support for their cause.
