Police Actions Against Aca Đukanović Spark Political Controversy
The recent police actions involving the arrest and search of Aca Đukanović have ignited significant political controversy in Montenegro. The Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS) has condemned the police’s handling of the situation, labeling it a culmination of political abuse and an indication of the institution’s subservience to the interests of the ruling party.
DPS officials assert that the operation aimed to divert attention from ongoing scandals and misconduct related to the police administration. They argue that this action has further discredited and undermined the integrity of the police force, which is supposed to serve all citizens impartially.
According to a statement from the DPS, the manner in which the operation was executed compromises not only the credibility of the Director of the Police Administration, Lazar Šćepanović, but also that of Prime Minister Milojko Spajić. The party claims that Šćepanović has subordinated the police to the interests of the Democratic Montenegro party in an effort to retain his position.
DPS spokespersons highlighted the troubling behavior of MP Boris Bogdanović, who allegedly operates without authorization, openly managing police actions as if he were in command. This behavior, they assert, not only breaches the law but also reflects a concerning lack of self-control among those in power.
The DPS warns that if these actions signal the beginning of an electoral campaign by the ruling majority, it could pose a serious threat to the political landscape in Montenegro. The party’s statement emphasized the potential dangers of politicizing the security sector, particularly in a country aspiring for European Union membership.
As the year preceding elections unfolds, the DPS questions the legitimacy of the upcoming vote amid claims of political persecution. They assert that if this is the conduct of a party and its leaders who appear to have seized control of the security apparatus for the purpose of targeting political adversaries, such practices cannot be tolerated.
In response to the growing crisis, the DPS has pledged to hold accountable those in leadership positions within institutions funded by taxpayers. They insist that these institutions must not be hijacked or exploited for political gain, particularly in an environment marked by increasing tensions and potential electoral manipulation.
The unfolding situation raises significant concerns regarding the rule of law and democratic principles in Montenegro, and the DPS’s response underscores the deepening divisions within the country’s political landscape. As citizens observe these developments, the implications for the upcoming elections remain uncertain, particularly as the call for accountability grows louder.
