Montenegro Court Extends Detention for Organized Crime Suspects
The Supreme Court of Montenegro has extended the detention of three individuals—Nikoli Popović, Goran Orbović, and Darko Purović—until June 16, 2026. This decision stems from concerns regarding the risk of flight as they face serious allegations related to organized crime and cigarette smuggling.
On March 10, 2026, the Special State Prosecutor’s Office of Montenegro submitted a request to prolong the detention of the accused, leading to the court’s ruling. The Supreme Court determined that there is substantial evidence indicating that the defendants were part of a criminal organization operating in Montenegro and potentially other countries, with the primary objective of smuggling untaxed cigarettes for illicit financial gain.
The court highlighted that each of the accused had a defined role in executing a criminal plan that involved the procurement, transportation, concealment, and sale of untaxed cigarettes while evading customs controls. The evidence collected during the investigation has raised sufficient suspicion about their involvement in these activities.
Initially, the detention of Nikoli Popović, Goran Orbović, and Darko Purović was ordered by a judge from the High Court in Podgorica on December 18, 2025. The Criminal Council of that court subsequently extended their detention on January 15, 2026. With the Supreme Court’s latest ruling, their detention may last until mid-June of this year.
Authorities have expressed their commitment to addressing organized crime effectively. The ongoing investigation into this case reflects broader efforts to combat illegal activities that undermine economic integrity and public safety.
