Vesna Medenica, the former President of the Supreme Court of Montenegro, has been arrested on suspicions of involvement in a criminal organization led by her son, Miloš Medenica. This development follows a recorded telephone conversation in which she expressed significant personal sacrifices made for the sake of her duties.

The phone call, intercepted on April 14, 2022, occurred just three days before her arrest. According to transcripts obtained by the Adria portal, Medenica stated, “I have become the biggest thief, and I have given up my own life to fulfill my responsibilities properly.” This statement reflects the gravity of her situation as she faces serious legal challenges.

During the call, the main topic was reportedly Miloš Medenica’s health issues. However, eight days prior, the Libertas news agency published a report from Europol, indicating that Miloš was allegedly involved in cigarette smuggling and drug trafficking. The report was submitted to Montenegrin police and prosecutors, raising serious concerns about the Medenica family’s activities.

Miloš Medenica reportedly claimed, through data from the encrypted messaging service Sky, that his mother was aware of his illegal activities and provided him with protection. Both Vesna and Miloš categorically denied all accusations against them.

During a court session at the Higher Court in Podgorica, Judge Vesna Kovačević clarified that the content of the intercepted conversation relates to “private problems of the accused Medenica.” This statement underlines the sensitive nature of the case and the significant implications for the former chief justice.

The situation has drawn attention not only due to the serious nature of the allegations but also because of the potential impact on Montenegro’s judiciary. As further details emerge, the public and legal analysts are closely monitoring the unfolding events surrounding the Medenica family.

With the legal proceedings still ongoing, the implications for Vesna Medenica’s career and the broader judicial system in Montenegro remain uncertain, leaving many to ponder the future of justice in the country.
