Vice President Kashim Shettima has underscored the significance of marriage as a foundational element for social stability and long-term national development in Nigeria. Speaking on October 15, 2023, in Makurdi, the capital of Benue State, Shettima articulated that marriage transcends being a personal milestone; it serves as a critical social institution that fosters values essential for national cohesion and progress.

Marriage as a Cornerstone of National Strength

While representing President Bola Tinubu at the wedding ceremony of Miss Deborah Ershima and Mr. Samuel Aondoakur, the son of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, Shettima reflected on the profound impact of marital unions on societal development. He expressed that a strong family unit contributes directly to the broader goals of national development.

“There are moments in life an event quietly writes itself into memory. Today is one of those moments. We have come together not merely to witness a wedding but to stand at the intersection of two stories choosing to become one,” he stated, emphasizing the symbolic nature of marriage as a union of lives.

The Values of Marriage and Family

Shettima praised the families of the couple for raising children imbued with discipline, faith, and character. He asserted that strong families do not form by accident; rather, they are the result of intentional efforts in value formation. Successful marriages, he suggested, thrive on qualities such as alignment, patience, and humility, rather than the pursuit of perfection.

“A home is not built by vows alone. It is built by everyday choices. By the decision to return kindness for impatience. By the courage to apologise even when you feel justified,” he explained. These everyday decisions, according to Shettima, are what sustain marriages long after the ceremonies conclude.

Further illustrating his point, he drew parallels between the resilience of Nigerian families and the nation’s capacity to endure challenges. The Vice President urged parents, relatives, and society to provide married couples with support and counsel, rather than imposing undue pressure. “Stable homes flourish in an atmosphere of understanding,” he noted.

As he concluded his address, Shettima offered heartfelt wishes to the newlyweds. “Deborah and Samuel, may your home be anchored in trust and sustained by faith. May your laughter outlast your disagreements,” he prayed, encouraging them to cultivate a relationship rooted in companionship, respect, and enduring friendship.

Earlier, SGF Senator Akume commended President Tinubu for his leadership since taking office in May 2023. He expressed gratitude for the significant representation at the wedding, particularly highlighting Shettima’s presence despite a busy schedule. “The quality of representation here is massive and fundamental,” Akume stated, acknowledging the importance of the event.

Also present, Governor of Benue State Father Hyacinth Alia expressed appreciation for the ongoing efforts of President Tinubu and Vice President Shettima towards the betterment of Nigeria. He congratulated the couple and promised continued support, stating, “It is my hope that this young couple will add a lot of value to the growth and development of Benue State.”

In a gesture of goodwill, Alia concluded his address with blessings for the couple, hoping they would be guided and protected as they embark on their marital journey.
