President Tinubu Engages Former Rivers Administrator Ibas in Key Meeting
On the evening of September 27, 2025, President Bola Tinubu convened a meeting with former Rivers State Administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (rtd), at the State House in Abuja. The discussion unfolded amidst recent political changes following the termination of the emergency rule in Rivers State.
Vice Admiral Ibas arrived at the State House around 17:50, dressed in traditional brown attire. He was accompanied by the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, and Ola Olukayode, the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Edun had made a brief earlier appearance at the State House before returning with important documentation, indicating the significant nature of the meeting.
Political Context and Legislative Developments
Ibok-Ete Ibas served as the sole administrator of Rivers State until his tenure ended on September 17, 2025, following the conclusion of a six-month emergency rule imposed in March 2025. This emergency period was characterized by heightened scrutiny over state expenditures and governance.
In a decisive move, President Tinubu recently instructed the reinstatement of the suspended governor, Siminalayi Fubara, alongside his deputy and members of the Rivers State House of Assembly. The House convened for its first session after the emergency rule on September 25, 2025, during which Speaker Martin Amaewhule announced plans for an investigation into the management of state funds during Ibas’ administration.
Legislators resolved to assess the expenditures made from the consolidated revenue fund under Ibas’ leadership, specifically concerning contract awards and other spending during the emergency rule. In response to these developments, Ibas publicly criticized the decision to probe the financial activities of his administration, indicating potential tensions in the political landscape.
Financial Oversight and Accountability
Official records highlight that Rivers State received approximately ₦254.37 billion from the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) during the period from March to August 2025, coinciding with Ibas’ tenure as administrator. This substantial amount raises questions regarding financial oversight and accountability during the emergency administration.
The outcome of the ongoing investigations and the implications for Ibas and the state’s governance remain to be seen. As the political climate evolves, the focus will likely remain on ensuring transparency and responsible management of state resources in Rivers.
This meeting between President Tinubu and key figures such as Ibas, Edun, and Olukayode underscores the critical intersections of governance, accountability, and economic management in Nigeria’s political framework.
