Nigerians Urged to Vote Consciously Ahead of 2027 Elections
The Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria (CSN) has called on citizens to approach the upcoming 2027 general elections with a sense of responsibility, urging them to make political and civic choices based on conscience and the common good. In a New Year message, the CSN emphasized the need for Nigerians to prioritize truth over ethnic loyalty, religious bias, and financial inducements as they prepare for the elections.
Rev. Fr. Michael Banjo, Secretary-General of the CSN, highlighted that the nation’s renewal is reliant not just on leadership, but also on the daily decisions of its citizens. He stated, “Nigeria can be better, and authentic love for our country demands more than pointing out its failures; it calls for personal fidelity to what is right.” Banjo stressed the importance of individual moral responsibility in creating a positive change in the country.
Emphasizing Integrity in Public Service
The CSN’s message also included a strong condemnation of corruption, urging public servants and professionals to reject bribery and the abuse of office throughout 2026. Banjo called on traders, artisans, and business owners to conduct their affairs with honesty and integrity, reminding them that their labor is not only for their employers but ultimately for a higher purpose.
He further emphasized the necessity for citizens to treat public infrastructure—such as roads, schools, and hospitals—with respect and care. “Renewal must extend beyond the corridors of power and take root in everyday life,” he noted, underscoring the need for Nigerians to act as stewards of their community resources rather than neglecting or vandalizing them.
A Call to the Youth
Banjo also addressed the younger generation, challenging them to embrace education, discipline, and character development. He warned against the dangers of drugs, crime, and shortcuts that can derail their potential and hinder national progress. The CSN sees the 2027 elections as a pivotal moment for civic responsibility, where the choices made by voters can shape the future of Nigeria.
Despite the economic difficulties, insecurity, and social tensions experienced over the past year, Banjo expressed a hopeful outlook for the New Year, asserting that hope must translate into responsible actions. The CSN’s call to action serves as a reminder that the strength of a nation lies in the collective moral choices of its people.
