Nigerian Army Chief Urges Troops for Major Offensive Against Terrorists
The Chief of Army Staff (COAS) of Nigeria, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has called on troops of the North-East Joint Task Force, known as Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK), to prepare for a significant offensive against Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP). This announcement was made during a recent address to troops at the Maimalari Cantonment in Maiduguri, Borno State. General Shaibu emphasized that this operation represents a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s ongoing counter-insurgency efforts, with the potential to significantly impact the nation’s struggle against terrorism.
During his address, General Shaibu stated that the upcoming operations would mark a new beginning in the fight against insurgents. He assured the troops that they have undergone rigorous training and highlighted the enhanced support available to them, including upgraded operational platforms and surveillance assets. “You have been training to defeat the terrorists disturbing the North-East. This time, you are going to do it differently,” he said. The Army Chief underscored that the responsibility to confront Boko Haram and ISWAP now rests squarely on their shoulders, urging the new generation of troops to surpass the achievements of their predecessors.
Reports indicate that while these terrorist groups have been weakened, they continue to exploit vulnerabilities along the borders and are reportedly regrouping around the Lake Chad area. Military analysts have raised concerns that shifts in global geopolitics, including rising extremist propaganda and disruptions in arms trafficking routes, could embolden militants if Nigeria’s military actions lose momentum.
In a bid to bolster troop morale, General Shaibu reassured the soldiers of the Army’s unwavering support. He revealed that experienced officers have been deployed to the operational theatre, accompanied by advanced technology and precision strike capabilities. “Those before you have done it. This is your own time,” he declared, aiming to instill a sense of urgency and purpose among the ranks.
The Army Chief also prioritized troop welfare, emphasizing its critical role in morale and effectiveness during combat. He announced improvements in rations and allowances, alongside prompt payments of entitlements and enhanced medical care. “Your welfare has been taken care of… We will continue to improve your well-being,” he stated. Furthermore, he pledged greater investment in accommodations and education for soldiers’ families, ensuring that their children have access to quality schooling through Army command and children’s schools.
General Shaibu’s visit to Maiduguri included a tour of the 7 Division Medical Specialists Hospital, where he met with wounded personnel. He also paid a courtesy visit to the Shehu of Borno, inspected ongoing projects at the Nigerian Army Aviation/TB2 Armed Drone Hangar, and commissioned new Heroes’ Accommodation for transit soldiers before returning to Abuja.
In a moment of remembrance, General Shaibu led officers and soldiers in honoring the memory of the late Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, who passed away a year ago. During a Juma’at service held to commemorate the anniversary of his death, the COAS described General Lagbaja as a gallant leader whose contributions to Nigeria’s security remain invaluable. He noted that various commemorative activities, including church services and Friday prayers, have been organized to honor his legacy and the sacrifices of all personnel who have served the nation.
General Shaibu expressed his condolences to the family of the late COAS, encouraging them to find comfort in the enduring legacy of courage and service he left behind. He reiterated that General Lagbaja’s leadership continues to inspire the Nigerian Army. The Army Chief concluded his address by appealing to the public for ongoing support of the Armed Forces through prayers and a collective commitment to national unity, affirming that the military remains steadfast in its mission to safeguard the country and preserve its territorial integrity.
