Montenegro Defeats Serbia 15-13 in Thrilling Water Polo Match
Montenegro’s water polo team secured a dramatic victory over Serbia, winning the match 15-13 during the European Championship. The game showcased the talent and resilience of Montenegro’s young players, who managed to stage a remarkable comeback, overcoming a two-goal deficit in the second quarter.
The match took place on March 3, 2024, and despite being a game without significant implications for the standings, Montenegro demonstrated exceptional skill and determination. With only eight minutes remaining, they faced the challenge of playing a man down but executed a series of defensive plays that thwarted Serbia’s efforts five times.
Following a pivotal moment when Dusan Mandic scored to bring Montenegro within one goal at 13-12, the team rallied. Young players, especially Danilo Stupar, played a crucial role in this turnaround. Stupar not only initiated the equalizing series but also made two critical steals from the opposing team. With just over two minutes left, Dusan Matkovic scored, giving Montenegro a 14-13 lead. The game concluded with a counterattack goal from Balsa Vuckovic, who was the standout player, sealing the victory.
As the main round of the championship came to a close, Montenegro exited with two wins from their matches in Group E. The host nation, Serbia, secured a place in the semifinals and will face Greece. Montenegro, on the other hand, will compete for seventh place against Romania.
The atmosphere during the match was electric, with Montenegro players maintaining their composure despite Serbia leading 6-4 in the first quarter. The reduced pressure allowed coach Dejan Savic‘s team to play with more freedom and confidence. Even after losing three key defenders to fouls in the final quarter, Montenegro’s players displayed remarkable courage and tenacity.
This significant victory against a medal contender could have long-lasting implications for Montenegro’s future in international water polo. The team aims to build on this momentum, with aspirations for a third consecutive win against Romania.
In addition to Vuckovic’s impressive four goals, Montenegro’s scoring efforts included three goals from Strahinja Gojkovic and two each from Dusan Matkovic and Marko Mrsic. Other contributors to the scoreline included Dmitri Holod, Jovan Vujovic, Miroslav Perkovic, and Danilo Stupar.
As the tournament progresses, the focus shifts to today’s matches in Group F, featuring Turkey against Georgia, Italy facing Croatia, and Romania going up against Greece. Meanwhile, Spain’s hopes of defending their title have been dashed following a narrow loss to Hungary in a penalty shootout, concluding their campaign in the championship.
This exhilarating match not only highlighted Montenegro’s emerging talent but also set the stage for an exciting conclusion to the tournament.
