Goodluck Jonathan Reflects on Political Journey at 60th Celebration

Former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has shared insights into his remarkable political journey, describing his swift transition from deputy governor to president of Nigeria in just four years as “a political miracle.” He made these remarks during a book launch honoring renowned journalist and former presidential spokesman Dr. Reuben Abati, who celebrated his 60th birthday.

Speaking at the event, Jonathan attributed his rapid rise to divine intervention, stating, “My political journey looks like a political miracle. From deputy governor to become the president of this country under four years was a miracle. It’s only God that made it possible.” His comments highlight the often unpredictable nature of political careers in Nigeria, where rapid advancements can occur amidst a complex landscape.

The former president expressed his gratitude to Abati for chronicling aspects of his political life in the book titled ‘How Goodluck Jonathan Became President.’ He praised Abati’s intellect and writing skills, stating, “I always like people who write about me because sometimes it’s so difficult for you to even write about yourself.” Jonathan indicated his eagerness to read the book, reflecting on how others’ perspectives can enrich understanding of one’s own journey.

Jonathan recounted his first meeting with Abati in 2010, when Abati reviewed a compilation of Facebook posts about him. “When I looked through that review, I said this is somebody that has something upstairs,” Jonathan recalled, noting Abati’s scholarly abilities.

During the celebration, Jonathan extended heartfelt wishes to Abati, remarking, “You are celebrating your diamond jubilee today with your beautiful wife, and I say happy birthday to my younger brother and good friend, Reuben Abati.” He acknowledged Abati’s significant contributions to journalism and public discourse, stating, “I thank you for contributing to knowledge. You served with me very well, and I have to appreciate that. You’re like a younger brother to me.”

In attendance were several distinguished guests, including Governor Alex Otti, former Governor Gbenga Daniel, and Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah. Jonathan described the event as “a fitting tribute to a man of intellect, service and patriotism,” underscoring the impact of Abati’s work on national conversations.
