NAFDAC Clarifies Amoxicillin Status Amid False Rumors
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has officially denied rumors claiming a ban on Amoxicillin in Nigeria. In a statement released on October 16, 2023, the agency emphasized that these allegations are unfounded and misleading.
In her statement, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, the Director General of NAFDAC, addressed a video circulating on social media that suggested the agency had imposed a secret ban on the widely used antibiotic. “This claim is entirely FALSE. NAFDAC has not banned Amoxicillin,” she asserted.
The agency clarified that while it regularly issues safety alerts and recalls for specific substandard batches of medicines, there is no comprehensive ban on Amoxicillin. This clarification is crucial as the antibiotic is an essential medication used to treat various bacterial infections.
Targeted Alerts, Not a Ban
NAFDAC has been proactive in addressing public health concerns, having previously issued targeted safety alerts regarding certain batches and brands of Amoxicillin deemed substandard and unfit for public use. However, the agency stressed that these measures were limited to specific products and did not constitute a general ban on the antibiotic.
“We urge the public, healthcare professionals, and stakeholders to disregard the misinformation and rely only on verified updates published on NAFDAC’s official channels,” Adeyeye stated. The agency’s commitment to ensuring the safety and efficacy of medicines in Nigeria remains unwavering, and it continues to monitor the pharmaceutical market closely.
The spread of misinformation, particularly through social media, poses a significant challenge to public health. NAFDAC’s statement serves as a reminder of the importance of obtaining information from credible sources, especially regarding health-related matters.
As the conversation continues, NAFDAC remains focused on its mission to safeguard public health while encouraging transparency and reliance on verified information. The agency’s efforts highlight the critical role it plays in the regulation of pharmaceuticals in Nigeria, ensuring that healthcare professionals and the public can access safe and effective medications.
In a landscape rife with misinformation, NAFDAC’s clarifications are vital for maintaining trust in the health system and ensuring the well-being of the Nigerian population.
