Doctor Shares Essential Steps After Flu Exposure Amid Outbreak
A family doctor has outlined critical actions individuals should take if they have been exposed to the flu, particularly amid a surge of the influenza A(H3N2) variant in the United States. In a recent TikTok video, Dr. Jessica Kiss, a board-certified family physician, provided essential guidance as cases of this severe flu strain continue to rise.
According to Dr. Kiss, the flu has a short incubation period of one to four days, during which individuals may become contagious before showing any symptoms. “The single biggest call I am getting outside of people being actively sick is that they’ve been exposed to somebody with the H3N2 virus,” she stated. This highlights the importance of preventive measures during this outbreak.
Preventive Measures to Consider
Dr. Kiss emphasized the significance of hand hygiene and mask-wearing in reducing transmission. “That’s the time where the virus is already replicating in you,” she explained, underscoring that proactive measures can mitigate the risk of infection.
She also mentioned that aggressive nasal saline rinses may provide some benefit, although their effectiveness in this specific situation remains uncertain. For those who have been exposed, there are two antiviral medications, Tamiflu and Xofluza, that can reduce the risk of developing the virus. “Doctors can prescribe these medicines before symptoms appear,” Dr. Kiss noted.
Understanding Antiviral Options
Xofluza is a single-dose pill that can be taken either preventively after exposure or within 72 hours of developing flu symptoms. While Dr. Kiss acknowledged a recent study suggesting the potential for the virus to develop resistance to this medication, she clarified that no clinical evidence has confirmed this in her practice or among her colleagues.
Tamiflu, another antiviral option, is typically taken twice daily for five days after symptom onset. However, if taken prophylactically after exposure, it is administered once daily for ten days unless symptoms arise. “It’s very important to talk to your doctor about the appropriate course of action,” Dr. Kiss advised, highlighting the need for personalized medical guidance.
In the comment section of her video, viewers shared their own experiences and strategies for managing flu exposure. Some suggested sanitizing common surfaces, while others mentioned taking probiotics to bolster their immune systems.
As reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), flu activity is currently elevated across much of the United States. As of December 13, states like New York, New Jersey, and Louisiana have recorded a significant number of outpatient visits for flu-like symptoms. Notably, New York experienced its highest weekly flu infection rate on December 20, with over 71,123 cases reported, according to the New York State Department of Health.
The CDC’s data indicates that infections are rising in 47 states, with only Hawaii reporting a decline in cases. With flu season in full swing, experts emphasize the importance of preventive measures and timely medical intervention to manage the outbreak effectively.
