Bosniaks Seek Closer Ties with Bosnia and Herzegovina Amid Isolation
Legislator Kenana Strujić Harbić of the Bosniak Party has highlighted a significant communication gap between Bosniaks in Montenegro and their ethnic homeland, Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH). Speaking at the conference titled “Geopolitical Changes and the Position of Bosniaks in the Western Balkans,” held in Sarajevo, she emphasized that while other ethnic groups in the region maintain robust connections with their respective nations, Bosniaks find themselves largely isolated.
Strujić Harbić pointed out that Serbs in Montenegro benefit from their ties to Serbia, while Albanians have links with two countries, and Croats enjoy a 24-hour communication channel with Croatia. In contrast, she noted, “Bosniaks are left to fend for themselves.” This stark comparison underscores the challenges faced by the Bosniak community in fostering relationships with their “motherland.”
The legislator also remarked that there is no regular communication with BiH on even a monthly basis. She expressed hope that the upcoming elections in BiH would lead to changes that could improve the situation. “We, as a small party in Montenegro, have contributed to changing the narrative regarding Bosniaks. I hope that both Sarajevo and Bosnia and Herzegovina will recognize their importance,” she stated.
Strujić Harbić acknowledged that having a Minister of Foreign Affairs from the Bosniak Party in Montenegro serves as an advantage for the community. This position provides a platform for promoting their interests, but it does not replace the need for a more consistent dialogue with BiH.
The conference in Sarajevo gathered various stakeholders to discuss the geopolitical dynamics affecting the Western Balkans. Strujić Harbić’s comments reflect broader concerns among Bosniaks about their political representation and influence in a region where ethnic identities play a crucial role in governance and international relations.
As the region moves forward, the need for enhanced communication and cooperation among ethnic groups and their respective states may become increasingly critical. The Bosniak community’s aspirations for a more connected future hinge on fostering stronger ties with their homeland and securing better representation in Montenegro.
