Police Enforce Restrictions on London Protests Amid Tensions

Protests took place on opposing sides of London this weekend, following the Metropolitan Police’s imposition of restrictions aimed at preventing serious disorder. Supporters of the **UK Independence Party** (Ukip) were barred from holding a rally and march initially scheduled for **October 24, 2025**, near **Whitechapel Station** in east London. Instead, they will gather outside the **London Oratory**, a Catholic church located in **Kensington**, at **1:00 PM**, before marching towards **Marble Arch**.

The planned demonstration by Ukip is part of a series of events across the UK dubbed a “mass deportations tour.” Organisers have called on individuals to “reclaim Whitechapel from the Islamists,” as noted on Ukip’s social media platforms. In response to the potential for conflict, the Metropolitan Police enacted the **Public Order Act**, restricting the protest to locations outside the borough of **Tower Hamlets**.

Meanwhile, a counter-protest organised by **Stand Up To Racism** (SUTR) and other local groups is still set to proceed from **12:00 PM** in east London. However, the police have also placed restrictions on SUTR, preventing them from gathering in areas of central London where the Ukip protest is located.

Commander **Nick John**, responsible for public order policing in London this weekend, stated, “Our role in relation to the policing of protest is to ensure that they take place peacefully… and to ensure that where there is a prospect of disorder we take action to prevent it.” He emphasized that the police intervention was not a ban but rather a necessary measure to mitigate risks associated with opposing groups gathering closely.

The conditions imposed earlier this week on the Ukip protest remain in effect. Participants in the march must adhere to a timeframe, prohibited from protesting before **1:00 PM** or after **4:30 PM**.

The police have warned attendees of both protests to familiarize themselves with the restrictions, highlighting that individuals breaching these conditions, or encouraging others to do so, may face arrest. The police’s decision underlines their commitment to maintaining order in a city where tensions surrounding hate crimes and similar issues are particularly heightened.

As the day unfolds, both groups are expected to demonstrate their respective viewpoints, with law enforcement closely monitoring the situation to prevent any escalation of tensions.
