Youth Theatre Shines in National Theatre Connections’ Fishville
The Intermediate Youth Theatre at the Corn Exchange delivered an impressive performance of Fishville on March 24 and 25, 2025, as part of the National Theatre Connections festival. This annual event celebrates young talent across the UK, and the company’s interpretation of the haunting story showcased their creativity and emotional depth.
The play opens with an evocative image: a young man named Jared standing at the water’s edge, clad in swimming gear, yet he never enters the sea. Following the sudden sale of his parents’ house, his unexpected death sends shockwaves through the community of Saltwell. As the narrative unfolds, the arrival of the new homeowner’s daughter and the discovery of a severed foot prompt the local youth to investigate the mystery surrounding Jared’s fate. Their quest not only uncovers secrets about Jared but also reveals the intricacies of their relationships and the potential for a community to unravel.
The strength of the performances was immediately evident. The young actors maintained focus and demonstrated a clear understanding of their characters’ intentions. Their grasp of the text allowed for a coherent and engaging storytelling experience. Each performance was marked by sincerity, with a strong commitment that brought the emotional journey of the play to life.
Choreography and Ensemble Work Stand Out
The ensemble’s contribution was especially noteworthy. They embodied the sea—ever-present, watchful, and filled with memories. Utilizing floating blue and green fans, the cast created fluid movements that were both mesmerizing and impactful. The choreography felt natural, while the atmospheric music and recorded voiceovers added depth, crafting a world that was dark, otherworldly, and magical.
This production was not only visually striking but also a testament to the connection among the cast members. It told a clear, committed story, performed with sensitivity and imagination. The collaborative effort highlighted the importance of ensemble work in theatre, bringing a strong sense of shared purpose to the stage.
As the company prepares for their next performance at the Northwall in Oxford in April, there is a palpable sense of excitement about their future. With the talent displayed in Fishville, audiences can expect another captivating experience.
