Chenab Rail Bridge Opens as World’s Tallest Railway Structure
India has inaugurated the Chenab Rail Bridge, now recognized as the highest railway bridge in the world. Spanning the deep gorge of the Chenab River in Jammu and Kashmir, the bridge reaches a remarkable height of 1,178 feet above the riverbed, surpassing London’s Shard skyscraper and the Eiffel Tower. This milestone in engineering opened to the public on June 6, 2025, marking a significant achievement in the country’s infrastructure development.
The Chenab Rail Bridge, which stretches 4,314 feet, was constructed using over 28,000 tonnes of steel. Designed to last for 120 years, it can accommodate trains traveling at speeds of up to 62 mph. Its construction was a complex endeavor, taking approximately 20 years from project approval in the early 2000s to completion in 2025. The project was overseen by the Konkan Railway Corporation on behalf of Indian Railways, with design contributions from WSP Finland, arch designs from Leonhardt, Andrä und Partner, and support from the Vienna Consulting Engineers.
Engineering Challenges and Innovations
The bridge features several specialized components, including blast-resistant foundations, high-strength steel arches, and a corrosion-resistant paint system intended to last for 15 years. It is engineered to withstand earthquakes with a magnitude of up to 8, extreme wind conditions, and temperatures as low as −20°C. Constructing the bridge presented unique challenges, given its location in a seismically active area characterized by fractured terrain and severe weather conditions. Additionally, the bridge lies just 39 miles from the Line of Control (LoC), the de facto border with Pakistan, requiring meticulous planning and innovative engineering solutions.
The total cost of the project amounted to approximately ₹14.86 billion (£122 million) and plays a crucial role in the Udhampur–Srinagar–Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL). This 169-mile railway will connect the Kashmir Valley to the rest of India by rail for the first time, enhancing transport and economic activity in the region. The completion of the bridge’s arch was achieved by April 2021, and the entire structure was finalized in August 2022.
Trial runs commenced in June 2024, leading up to the official launch of regular rail traffic. During the inauguration ceremony, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed pride in the bridge’s completion, stating, “The Tricolour flies high over the Chenab Rail Bridge! It’s a feeling of immense pride that this bridge seamlessly blends ambition with execution, reflecting India’s growing capability to build futuristic infrastructure in the most challenging terrains.”
The Chenab Rail Bridge stands as a testament to India’s engineering prowess and commitment to enhancing connectivity in challenging environments, representing a significant step forward in the nation’s infrastructural landscape.
