Zipcar Confirms Closure of UK Operations, Affecting 650,000 Drivers

Car-sharing company Zipcar has announced the termination of its operations in the UK, which will impact approximately 650,000 drivers across the country. The US-based firm, known for offering hourly and longer-term rentals of cars and vans, informed its UK customers on December 1, 2024, about plans to temporarily suspend new bookings at the start of the new year.

On Friday, Zipcar sent an email to its customers confirming the decision to cease operations in the UK. The company stated, “In accordance with clause 7.5 of the member terms, please take this as your written notice that we will formally close your account in 30 days’ time.” Customers were informed that they would not be able to make new bookings, but their accounts would remain active until February 16, 2025.

The company also addressed the financial implications of this closure. Zipcar disclosed that it had experienced losses deepening to £5.7 million in 2024, attributed to a significant drop in customer trips. This downturn prompted the company to launch a formal consultation with its 71 UK employees, as it prepares for the operational shutdown.

In its communication, Zipcar assured customers that they would be entitled to a pro-rated refund for any remaining periods on their current plans or subscriptions starting from January 1, 2026. The company specified that these refunds would be processed automatically, requiring no action from users.

The decision to exit the UK market reflects broader challenges within the car-sharing industry, particularly as companies navigate shifting consumer habits and increasing competition.
