Protests Erupt in Bnei Brak Over Conscription Laws, Soldiers Attacked
Violent protests erupted in the ultra-Orthodox city of Bnei Brak, located just east of Tel Aviv, as thousands gathered to oppose proposed conscription laws aimed at members of the ultra-Orthodox community. The unrest escalated on October 15, 2023, when crowds chased two female soldiers from the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), prompting police intervention. Reports indicate that at least 26 individuals, including both soldiers and responding officers, were involved in the initial surge of violence.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned the violence, labeling the rioters as an “extreme minority.” In a post on X, he stated, “I strongly condemn the violent riots in Bnei Brak against female IDF soldiers and Israel police officers. This is a grave and unacceptable matter.” Netanyahu emphasized that such actions do not reflect the views of the broader haredi community.
The protests stem from ongoing tensions regarding legislation that could mandate military service for ultra-Orthodox individuals. Many in Bnei Brak argue that their primary duty is to engage in full-time religious study, making them opposed to compulsory enlistment. As the unrest continued, authorities reported at least 23 arrests, along with significant property damage, including the destruction of a bus and the setting of police motorcycles on fire.
“We will not allow anarchy, and we will not tolerate any harm to IDF servicemen and security forces who carry out their duties with dedication and determination,”
Netanyahu added, underscoring the government’s commitment to maintaining law and order during this turbulent period.
The ultra-Orthodox Jewish community, which comprises approximately 1.3 million individuals—about 13% of Israel’s population—has long benefited from exemptions from military service. These exemptions have been a central issue in Israeli society, and the proposed changes have reignited longstanding divisions.
The situation in Bnei Brak coincides with increased violence in Gaza, where hospitals reported that at least 11 Palestinians were killed in Israeli airstrikes within a 24-hour span. Among those killed were five men in their 20s from Khan Younis, according to Nasser Hospital. The Israeli military confirmed that these strikes were responses to ceasefire violations near the Yellow Line, indicating an escalation in the ongoing conflict.
As police and security forces established a heavy presence near Jabotinsky Street, they aimed to prevent further violence while protesters continued to block transport routes. Observers have expressed concern that unless a resolution is found, future protests may escalate further, leading to even greater unrest in the region.
The situation remains fluid, with authorities working to manage the ongoing tensions between the ultra-Orthodox community and the Israeli government, amid the backdrop of broader regional instability.
