Iran is on the brink of executing Erfan Soltani, a 26-year-old protester, just four days after his arrest during anti-government demonstrations. His execution is scheduled for tomorrow, raising alarms as public protests escalate and fatalities continue to rise in the country.

Soltani was detained on March 16, 2024, in the city of Fardis, near Tehran, amid a severe crackdown by the Iranian regime. Reports indicate that he faces charges of “waging war against God,” a serious offense in Iran that carries the death penalty. Activists claim he has been denied legal representation and the opportunity to defend himself, with a verdict reportedly delivered without a fair trial. Family members were granted a mere ten minutes to say goodbye to him prior to the execution, according to the National Union for Democracy in Iran.

Escalating Violence and Political Repression

The execution of Soltani would mark the first such action against a protester since the inception of widespread unrest at the end of last year. The Iranian government has intensified court proceedings to expedite the death sentences for those deemed ringleaders of the ongoing protests. The protests have, tragically, led to the deaths of over 544 individuals, including eight children, with more than 10,681 arrests reported across the nation.

Notably, the demonstrations originated from grievances over soaring inflation but have evolved into calls for the resignation of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The regime’s response has been increasingly violent, with security forces accused of directly killing hundreds of protesters. Among those who have lost their lives is Amir Mohammad Koohkan, a 26-year-old football referee, who was shot while participating in the protests in Neyriz.

Eyewitness accounts describe harrowing scenes, including footage showing numerous body bags outside a coroner’s office in Tehran, as families wait to identify their deceased loved ones. The regime’s security forces have been accused of employing brutal tactics in an effort to suppress dissent.

International Reactions and Threats of Military Action

The international community has reacted with alarm as tensions escalate. Former U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened military action against Iran in response to the violent crackdown on civilian protests. He indicated that options for potential military strikes could be discussed as early as today, despite Iran expressing a desire for dialogue. Trump asserted, “We may have to act before a meeting,” emphasizing the U.S. military’s readiness to respond decisively.

In response to these threats, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that Iran is not seeking war but is prepared to defend itself against any aggression. He warned that any military attacks would elicit a severe and forceful response from the Iranian government. Trump, in turn, vowed to retaliate with unprecedented force if necessary, indicating a precarious situation that could lead to further violence.

As protests continue across Iran, occurring in over 585 locations across all 31 provinces, fears of public executions are growing. The regime has a notorious history of conducting executions in public settings as a means of instilling fear among the populace. Last year, the government executed at least 1,200 prisoners, often in brutal fashion, with some events celebrated by regime supporters.

The Iranian government has also imposed an internet blackout in recent days, which many believe is an effort to suppress news of the ongoing violence and unrest. As protests enter their third week, the situation remains volatile, with rising casualties and a government determined to maintain control through lethal force.
