Rob Mills, a former international rugby player for Wales, passed away on March 15, 2024, at the age of 45. His death followed complications related to a double-lung transplant, leaving the rugby community in mourning. Mills, affectionately known as a “gentle giant,” was celebrated not only for his athletic prowess but also for his character and generosity.

Mills began his rugby career at Rhayader Rugby Club, where he later took on the role of player-coach. He also played for Builth Wells and Caerleon, representing Wales at the under-21 level and registered with the Scarlets from 2000 to 2002. In addition to his achievements on the field, he became a distinguished player for Wales’ deaf rugby team, showcasing his skill and commitment throughout his career.

His wife, Jade Mills, expressed her profound grief in a heartfelt statement released via Builth Wells RFC. “Rob was my absolute whole world,” she said. “We loved each other so intensely. We’ve had the most wonderful 10 years together and just three years ago welcomed our darling little boy, Morgan Robert Mills, into the world.” She described Rob as a devoted father, stating, “He absolutely idolised his boys, he really was the greatest Daddy.”

Jade reflected on their hopes for the future after his transplant, stating, “We thought that after Rob had had his double lung transplant we would get that life that we so desperately wanted, but devastating complications repeatedly kept happening and I have now forever lost my love.” She concluded with pride in his legacy, saying, “Rob was loved by absolutely everyone.”

Builth Wells RFC expressed their sorrow in a statement, highlighting Mills’ significant contributions to the club and the sport. “Rob’s rugby journey was one of real achievement. He will be remembered not only for his ability on the field, but for the pride, commitment, and respect he brought to the game throughout his career.” The club extended their condolences to his family and friends, emphasizing that he will always remain a part of the Builth Wells RFC family.

The Welsh Rugby Union Deaf also paid tribute, recalling Mills’ many contributions to the deaf rugby community. “Millsy was an excellent front row forward, and a true warrior,” they stated. “He left an indelible mark on Wales Deaf Rugby, and is a true legend of our team.” Colleagues remembered him as a larger-than-life character, with countless stories from team tours illustrating his vibrant personality and dedication.

Caerleon RFC president Nigel Puddy remembered Mills as both a tough competitor and a kind-hearted individual. “Rob was a lovely man. A hard player. A hard prop. Very physical,” he remarked. Off the field, Puddy highlighted Mills’ generosity, recounting how he helped others during the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In response to Mills’ passing, Caerleon RFC is planning to discuss potential tributes in the coming days and will observe a minute’s silence before their match against Garndiffaith. The profound impact Rob Mills had on his teammates, clubs, and the broader rugby community will be felt for years to come. His legacy as a player, husband, and father remains a testament to his character and love for the sport.
