Global New Year Celebrations Emphasize Hope for Peace in 2026
As the world welcomed 2026, celebrations unfolded across major cities, marked by fireworks, music, and a collective yearning for peace. Millions gathered in cities from Edinburgh to Sydney, each reflecting on the past year while looking forward with hope.
In the UK, approximately 100,000 people attended the iconic New Year’s Eve fireworks along the River Thames in London. Although tickets sold out weeks prior, many found vantage points throughout the city to enjoy the spectacle. Last year, over 30,000 people celebrated on Primrose Hill, but this year, the park was closed, and the Metropolitan Police urged the public to refrain from attempting to enter.
Meanwhile, in Edinburgh, tens of thousands gathered for the renowned Hogmanay street party, braving frigid temperatures brought on by Arctic air and strong winds. Across the UK, major events were planned to ring in the New Year, with cities like Belfast, Cardiff, Manchester, and Newcastle hosting their own celebrations.
In stark contrast, Kyiv and Moscow faced a different atmosphere. Both cities, deeply affected by the ongoing conflict, saw residents expressing hopes for peace as they transitioned into the New Year. A woman named Larisa, visiting from Altai Krai, shared her sentiments in central Moscow, stating, “I wish for the war to end; I think that this is the main and most important topic for our country.” In his televised address, Russian President Vladimir Putin called for unity among his troops, asserting that millions stand with them this New Year’s Eve.
In Kyiv, a curfew commenced at midnight, cancelling formal celebrations in the city. Despite the uncertainty, young Olesia, a 9-year-old girl, held onto optimism, saying, “I think there will be peace in the new year.” Many gathered in the streets, enjoying performances by local musicians before the curfew took effect.
Celebrations Across the Globe
As midnight struck in Sydney, the city launched a spectacular fireworks display featuring 40,000 pyrotechnic effects illuminating the harbour. This year’s event occurred under heightened security following a tragic incident where gunmen killed 15 people at a Jewish event. A minute’s silence was observed for the victims, with the Harbour Bridge lit in white and a menorah projected onto its pylons. Clover Moore, Lord Mayor of Sydney, noted, “After a tragic end to the year for our city, we hope that New Year’s Eve will provide an opportunity to come together and look with hope for a peaceful and happy 2026.”
Preparations were also underway in New York, where organizers set up security barriers in Times Square for the annual ball drop. Despite subzero temperatures, crowds were expected to gather for the iconic celebration.
On Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro, the atmosphere was vibrant as preparations began for the massive music and fireworks party known as “Reveillon.” Organizers aimed to surpass their previous Guinness World Record for the largest New Year’s Eve celebration.
In Seoul, thousands congregated at the Bosingak bell pavilion, where a bronze bell struck 33 times at midnight, following a tradition rooted in Buddhist cosmology. The chimes symbolize the dispelling of misfortune and the welcoming of peace and prosperity. Drones also lit up the sky with an image of a red horse, the symbol of 2026 in the Chinese zodiac, celebrating strength and perseverance.
In Taiwan, the E-Da World in Kaohsiung dazzled attendees with a 999-second fireworks display, drawing in 56,000 people to enjoy the themed festivities.
The New Year celebrations around the world not only highlighted cultural traditions but also underscored a shared hope for peace and healing as 2026 begins.
