Harriet Bibby, known for her role as Summer Spellman on the long-running ITV soap opera Coronation Street, is stepping into a new venture with the revival of the award-winning play My Name Is Rachel Corrie. This production, co-produced by Take Back Theatre and 53Two, is set to premiere in Manchester from March 18 to March 22, 2024.

Bibby, who joined the cast of Coronation Street in 2020, shared her excitement about this new project on social media. Teaming up with writer Ian Kershaw, known for his contributions to the soap and as the husband of veteran actress Julie Hesmondhalgh, Bibby aims to bring the poignant story of Rachel Corrie to life. The play is based on Corrie’s diaries and emails, recounting her experiences as a young American activist in Gaza, where she tragically lost her life at the age of 23.

Taking to Instagram on January 16, Bibby announced her involvement, stating, “We’ve been working on something beautiful!” The play highlights not just the challenges Corrie faced but also her vibrant personality, showcasing her curiosity, intelligence, and humor.

As the opening night approaches, Bibby provided an enthusiastic update on March 13, revealing that the final rehearsal had taken place. She expressed her eagerness for the performances, stating, “It’s true!! Next week is SHOW WEEK! Tickets are selling fast so if you haven’t got yours yet, the link is in my bio!”

Support from her Coronation Street colleagues has been overwhelming. Co-star Mollie Gallagher, who portrays Nina Lucas, and This Morning soap expert Sharon Marshall have both expressed their encouragement. Fans have also taken to social media to share their excitement. Comments include well-wishes from followers like @brandonbrindle from Canada, who said, “Awesome! I hope you have an amazing time performing this play.”

In a recent interview with the Mirror, Bibby reflected on her connection to the play, noting that Kershaw had seen it two decades ago and reached out to her after witnessing her talent. She described the production as “beautifully put together,” emphasizing the emotional depth of the material. “A lot of the play is quite light-hearted. You are meeting this young woman who is curious, smart, weird, and funny, but it’s also very poignant, so it’s emotionally draining and challenging too.”

The return of My Name Is Rachel Corrie not only showcases Bibby’s versatility as an actress but also brings attention to a significant story about activism and humanity. As the premiere date approaches, anticipation continues to build for what promises to be a powerful theatrical experience.
