Concerns over potential terrorist attacks have led several cities worldwide to cancel or modify their New Year’s celebrations as the world prepares to welcome 2026. The decision follows a significant law enforcement operation in the United States that disrupted a planned attack in Los Angeles.

On December 27, 2025, the FBI announced they had thwarted a terror plot targeting five locations across Los Angeles. Four individuals were arrested in the Mojave Desert, east of the city, during a raid on an extremist group. Kash Patel, the FBI Director, confirmed that agents intercepted the group while they were rehearsing their plans. A fifth suspect was apprehended in New Orleans for allegedly coordinating a separate but connected attack on New Year’s revelers.

While Los Angeles and New Orleans officials have not yet canceled their New Year’s events, several other major cities have taken precautionary measures.

Paris and Sydney Adjust Celebrations

In Paris, the traditional New Year’s Eve concert has been canceled following recommendations from local police due to security risks. According to the local news outlet sortiraparis.com, authorities urged the mayor to halt the event to prevent potential overcrowding and disorder in the popular Champs-Élysées area. Despite the concert’s cancellation, a fireworks display will still take place, allowing some festivities to continue.

In Sydney, the planned New Year’s pyrotechnics at Bondi Beach have been scrapped following a recent shooting incident in the area. The Waverley Council announced the cancellation, stating, “Due to the current situation on the ground, Waverley Council has made the decision to cancel New Year’s Eve events at Bondi Beach, including elrow XXL Bondi and Local’s Lawn,” as reported by Sky News. Event organizers indicated that this decision reflects a commitment to support Sydney’s Jewish community following the tragedy. Additionally, a minute of silence will be observed at Darlig Harbour at 11 p.m., with the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge illuminated in white to honor the victims.

Tokyo Takes Precautions

Similarly, in Tokyo, officials have canceled the New Year’s Eve countdown at Shibuya Station due to fears that large crowds could become targets for attacks or lead to dangerous stampedes. Ken Hasebe, the mayor of Shibuya, expressed concerns about the potential risks associated with public gatherings and drinking during the festivities, as noted by Japan Today.

As cities grapple with the balance between celebration and security, the global community remains vigilant in the face of threats. While some festivities will continue, the overall atmosphere for New Year’s celebrations has shifted significantly in light of recent events.
