Vuković Critiques Bojović’s Claims on Language and Discrimination
Jovana Vuković, a prominent member of the Main Board of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), has responded sharply to recent comments made by Dragan Bojović, a representative of the Democratic People’s Party (DNP). Vuković condemned Bojović’s assertions regarding the Montenegrin language, labeling them as political manipulation aimed at obscuring governmental responsibilities related to the environmental issues in Botun and Pljevlja.
In a public statement, Vuković characterized discussions surrounding “violent assimilation” due to the Montenegrin language as nothing more than cheap political tactics. Bojović had claimed that the designation of subjects in schools as Montenegrin/Serbian, Bosnian, and Croatian language and literature amounted to discrimination and an attempt at coercive assimilation.
Vuković countered this argument by stating, “Teaching children the official language of the state in which they live is not violence but rather a civilizational minimum of any sovereign and democratic nation.” She further argued that attempts to portray the Montenegrin language as a threat represent a direct attack on the constitutional order and statehood of Montenegro.
The issue, according to Vuković, transcends mere language discussions. She emphasized that such narratives serve as a smokescreen for pressing environmental concerns in Pljevlja and act as a hindrance to Montenegro’s European integration efforts.
Vuković insisted that manipulation by Bojović and his affiliated structures will not obscure the truth or prevent citizens from demanding accountability and concrete solutions to the country’s real challenges. She firmly stated, “As for the language, the Montenegrin language is not a matter of discussion but a constitutional reality that no one can erase.”
This situation highlights ongoing tensions in Montenegro regarding language, identity, and governance, reflecting deeper societal divisions that continue to shape the political landscape. Vuković’s remarks underscore a broader call for clarity and responsibility from political leaders amid pressing environmental and social issues.
