Islington Council Plans Major Green Space Expansion Amid Budget Cuts

Islington Council has unveiled plans to create enough new green space to cover the Emirates Stadium more than five times, as part of its latest budget strategy. The Labour-run council aims to deliver a balanced budget that prioritizes frontline services while cutting backroom funding by millions. This approach is designed to ensure that essential services remain intact for residents, despite significant budgetary adjustments.

In a statement to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, Islington’s Executive Member for Finance and Performance, Flora Williamson, affirmed that the council is in a “healthy place,” maintaining that it spends more per child than any other local authority in London. She emphasized that no universal services are facing cuts, despite plans to save £2.7 million from children’s services that the council is not obligated to provide.

The budget proposal includes a significant reduction in the council’s new homes target and overall investment, with a recognition that housebuilding will slow due to rising construction costs. Islington Council has allocated £59 million to buy back former council homes, aiming to address housing shortages. Although the council projects a £5 million underspend this year, it also anticipates a 10% increase in costs, which necessitates ongoing savings and efficiencies.

Opposition leader Benali Hamdache criticized the budget’s approach, describing the cuts to backroom staff and funding for housing and children’s services as reminiscent of “Tory economics.” In response, Cllr Williamson dismissed the comparison, highlighting the council’s commitment to spending £100 million on new council homes, which she believes can significantly improve residents’ lives.
