Hull’s Jakirovic Rewards Players with Cash Bonus After Victory

Hull City manager Sergej Jakirovic has announced that he will reward players Amir Hadziahmetovic and Charlie Hughes with a cash bonus for their contributions to a set-piece goal during a 2-1 victory against Southampton on October 21, 2023. The win marks an important milestone as Hull City moved back into the play-off positions in the Championship.

Jakirovic has been vocal about his desire for the team to improve their scoring from dead-ball situations. He expressed his satisfaction when Hadziahmetovic’s corner was expertly headed in by Hughes, giving Hull a substantial two-goal lead in the first half. The manager also commended Kyle Joseph for his exceptional opening goal, likening his finish to that of football legend Lionel Messi.

“We are very happy, congratulations to the lads. Tactically, we were good. The first goal, Kyle finished like Messi. From my angle, it was the perfect goal,” Jakirovic stated. He added, “I promised Amir and Charlie bonuses. It is impossible we have been practising set-pieces for so long and every single day we cannot score from them. But today everything was perfect.”

While Jakirovic did not disclose the exact amount of the bonuses, he assured that they would be in cash, emphasizing that financial incentives are a part of the sport.

Despite facing significant challenges, including the absence of 11 players due to injuries, Hull City managed to maintain an unbeaten streak in their last five away matches. Jakirovic acknowledged the difficulties ahead, stating, “It was a very difficult game for us, especially as we have a lot of problems with 11 injuries. We also lost a couple more in this game, so god knows who we’ll play on Tuesday.” He expressed gratitude towards his players for their resilience, noting, “They are fighting, even with the problems we have they are sticking together.”

Despite dominating possession and recording 22 shots on goal, Southampton struggled to convert opportunities into points. Ross Stewart managed to score a consolation goal, but it was not enough to change the result.

Eckert took time to address the team after the match, stating, “I won’t throw anyone under the bus. We are all responsible.” He reflected on the team’s current standing and expressed his determination to improve performance. “We are not where we want to be and I will do everything to turn it around,” he added.

The German manager emphasized the importance of internal communication, stating, “There were some very hard truths to be told, not just from me but between the players.
