Manchester United Prepares for Potential Player Exits Ahead of Deadline

Manchester United is poised to confirm two player transfers while several others may exit the club before the January transfer window closes on January 29, 2024, at 17:00 GMT. Despite some activity, the likelihood of new signings remains low as the club has opted for a cautious approach this month.

The transfer window has been relatively quiet for United, as the team has seen players return from injuries and the Africa Cup of Nations to bolster the squad. A notable moment was the failed bid to sign Antoine Semenyo from Bournemouth; the proposed £65 million deal will be revisited in the summer.

While Manchester United has indicated that they would only pursue new signings if long-term targets became available, Semenyo’s decision to join Manchester City has shifted the club’s focus. Nevertheless, the final days of the transfer window remain significant, especially with two loan moves set to be confirmed.

Toby Collyer, a 22-year-old midfielder, is on track to join Championship side Hull City after spending the first half of the season on loan at West Brom. Collyer returns to the fold following an injury and will join a Hull team currently occupying fourth place and pursuing promotion to the Premier League. Similarly, 19-year-old striker Ethan Wheatley will move to Bradford City in League One after being recalled from a loan at Northampton Town, where he netted three goals in 25 appearances.

In contrast, centre-back Tyler Fredricson, who has made four appearances for the first team this season, will remain at Old Trafford due to a calf injury that is expected to sideline him for a month. His recent performances included matches in the Carabao Cup and a Premier League victory against Newcastle. While there was interest from clubs in the Championship and Belgium, Fredricson’s injury has curtailed any potential moves.

Another centre-back, Rhys Bennett, is reportedly in discussions for a temporary move to Fleetwood Town. United is also working to secure loan opportunities for five additional players who have recently returned from their own loan spells.

Among those players are Habeeb Ogunneye, a 20-year-old defender who has trained with the senior squad since returning from Newport County, goalkeeper Elhy Harrison from Shrewsbury Town, and defenders Louis Jackson and Sonny Aljofree who have returned from Notts County and Solihull Moors, respectively. Striker Joe Hugill is also available for loan after being recalled from Barnet. The clock is ticking as the club aims to finalize these moves before the deadline.

The future of highly-regarded midfielder Sekou Kone, 19, remains uncertain. He has been training with Swiss side Lausanne-Sport and participated in a friendly match against Neuchâtel Xamax. With Lausanne owned by Ineos, which has strong ties to United, there is no immediate rush to finalize any agreements as the transfer window in Switzerland remains open until February 16, 2024.

As the deadline approaches, significant changes to United’s first-team squad appear unlikely. Players like Manuel Ugarte and Joshua Zirkzee will likely remain with the club despite interest from other European teams. Additionally, left-back Tyrell Malacia may stay at United, aiming for more playing time as he has only featured for two minutes this season. His situation could change in the final days of the transfer window as he seeks a solution that benefits his career.

As the January transfer window winds down, Manchester United’s decisions in the coming days could shape the club’s strategy for the remainder of the season.
