Hull Family Faces Rare Cancer Battle as Toddler Receives Diagnosis

A two-year-old boy from Hull has been diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of cancer, drastically changing his family’s life. Charlie Shilleto’s journey started when his mother, Louisa Shilleto, discovered a large lump under his arm while bathing him in early December. This alarming finding led to a series of urgent medical procedures that revealed the gravity of his condition.

After being rushed to Hull Royal Infirmary, Charlie was transferred to Leeds General Infirmary for further evaluation. Following a biopsy and an array of tests, his family received the devastating news just before Christmas: Charlie has stage four metastatic embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare and aggressive soft tissue cancer.

Louisa recalled the moment that changed everything. “We’d been busy untangling Christmas lights when I noticed the veins in his chest looked extraordinarily blue,” she said. “When we lifted his arm, we could see a lump the size of a golf ball.” Until that moment, Charlie had shown no apparent symptoms, leading to disbelief that something so serious could be affecting him.

The diagnosis revealed a large tumor occupying most of the left side of Charlie’s chest, which had spread to lymph nodes under his armpit and in his neck. In addition, the cancer caused a hole in his left lung, leading to its collapse. Medical professionals initiated treatment immediately, even before confirming the diagnosis, to save his life.

Charlie has completed his first round of chemotherapy but faces an arduous treatment plan expected to last for an additional two years. His parents, Louisa and Lee Shilleto, are adapting their lives around his care, having also to support their seven-year-old son, Oliver. Louisa expressed her uncertainty about Charlie’s future, noting that rhabdomyosarcoma has a high rate of relapse. “What we have seen from the first round of chemo is Charlie gets really ill,” she added. “He was very sick and got ulcers in his stomach and esophagus.”

The family managed to be home for Christmas Eve, celebrating together before facing another medical emergency. “The day after Boxing Day, we ended up back in Hull Royal when Charlie spiked a temperature,” Louisa recounted. “You look at what he is going through with his treatment and you think, why am I doing this to my little boy? It really is brutal.”

Louisa continues to hold onto hope, stating, “You hope that after six months they say, ‘we’ve treated it, there are no signs of the disease.’” She noted that while Charlie’s age may be an advantage, the road ahead remains uncertain.

In addition to the emotional toll, the family faces significant financial strain. Louisa’s sister-in-law, Alysha Curtis, has launched a GoFundMe campaign titled “Support the Shilleto Family Through the Unimaginable.” Alysha describes Charlie as her “kind, funny, gorgeous two-year-old nephew” and emphasizes the incredible care provided by the paediatric oncology team at Leeds General Infirmary.

Alysha highlighted the impact of Charlie’s illness on his ability to lead a normal life. “He can no longer attend his childminder’s, play with other children his own age, or live a normal life,” she said. Charlie requires full-time care as his immune system is severely compromised due to chemotherapy.

The GoFundMe page aims to alleviate some of the financial burdens the Shilleto family faces, including travel costs to and from Leeds, living expenses while away from home, and maintaining stability for Oliver during this challenging time. Alysha urged that every donation, no matter how small, contributes to supporting Charlie and his family during this difficult battle.

As the Shilleto family continues to navigate this unimaginable journey, they remain grateful for the support of their community and the professionals dedicated to Charlie’s care.
