Dornoch Family Stars in New Series of ‘This Farming Life’
A farming family from Dornoch, Scotland, is set to feature prominently in the eighth series of *This Farming Life*, which premieres on February 24, 2025. Rob and Emma Smith, who operate Davochfin Farm, are among five families highlighted in this season of the popular series. The show captures the realities of agricultural life against the stunning landscapes of Scotland.
The Smiths, first-generation farmers, made the significant move from Yorkshire to Dornoch with their children, Evalyn and Angus, to pursue their dream of farm ownership. Davochfin holds special memories for Rob, who spent childhood holidays at the location when it was a holiday destination. Their journey into farming has been one of determination; the couple built their agricultural knowledge from the ground up before seizing the opportunity to purchase the farm they had long aspired to own.
At Davochfin, the Smiths employ a strategy of diversification to ensure survival. They raise livestock while also managing a caravan park, fishing ponds, and a golf driving range. This blend of traditional farming with agritourism allows them to generate crucial additional income. During the winter months, livestock sales help cover expenses, but summer tourism is essential for offsetting costs. Despite their efforts, the financial pressures remain constant.
Since acquiring the farm, the Smiths have invested every available resource into necessary repairs and improvements. With a mortgage of £3,000 per month, balancing the books has become increasingly challenging. To help make ends meet, Rob has taken on two additional jobs in agricultural supplies, leaving him less time for the farm and his family. This arrangement has led to rising tensions, as Emma manages the daily demands of the farm and cares for Evalyn and Angus.
As the winter months approach, the series will show the Smiths facing tough business decisions and the emotional strains of farm life. One critical issue is the need to sell off livestock, although a particularly reluctant bullock complicates these plans. Viewers can expect to witness the family’s navigation through both personal and agricultural challenges as they work towards making their Highland dream sustainable.
The new series of *This Farming Life* will debut on BBC Two at 20:00 on February 24, 2025, after following the Smiths through ten months of farming. All episodes will also be available to stream on BBC iPlayer, providing audiences with a closer look at the rewarding yet demanding life of farming in Scotland.
