Celebrating Montenegro’s Cultural Milestones Through Music
Significant anniversaries were marked in Montenegro with a concert celebrating the 20th anniversary of the country’s independence and the founding of the Muzički centar Crne Gore. Renowned composer Žarko Mirković, who founded this institution and served as its first director from 2006 to 2019, delivered a compelling performance, reuniting with the symphonic ensemble after a six-year hiatus. This concert, titled “Narodna muzika,” represents Mirković’s first solo concert in a career spanning nearly half a century.
Under the baton of conductor Bojan Suđić, the concert featured the premiere of two new symphonic compositions by Mirković. The first was a three-part cycle titled “Otisak nestale zemlje,” a work noted for its remarkable complexity and emotional depth, filled with nostalgic memories. The second piece comprised five striking symphonic miniatures collectively named “Crnogorske.”
The second half of the concert showcased “Triptiha” (2010), performed by soprano Snežana Savičić-Sekulić, bass Ivan Šarić, and the Academic Choir “Krsmanović – Obilić.” This segment was dedicated to the heritage and beginnings of the Muzički centar, highlighting the essential role of the Crnogorski simfonijski orkestar and the artists who contributed to its establishment and development.
The hall was filled to capacity, with musicians facing the demanding challenge of the compositions. Their dedication created a unique atmosphere, resonating with profound emotions. The excitement of a premiere, with its accompanying anticipations and curiosities, charged the event. This part of the concert served as a cultural remembrance of the institution’s early days and the key artists involved in the original performances, echoing the legacy of the past.
Mirković’s compositions often incorporate folklore, which was no surprise given the concert’s theme. As he noted, folklore is “the mother tongue, the only ground we walk securely, and the only home we inhabit.” This romantic sentiment does not merely reflect Mirković’s postmodern compositional approach but also underscores the integration of folk principles into his music.
In works such as “Pisma” (1985), “Musica Sioranu” (1993), and “Slika samoće” (2002–2010), Mirković’s use of folkloric materials transcends mere motifs. Instead, he incorporates the principles of folk music, including typical performance styles, rhythmic patterns, and melodic embellishments, crafting a sound sculpture that is both innovative and inspiring. This artistic mastery was particularly evident in the five orchestral miniatures, which were both brilliant and rich in sound.
The journey to achieving such impactful performances is fraught with challenges. Under Bojan Suđić‘s assured direction, the orchestra navigated these trials with precision. His mature artistry not only showcased exceptional professionalism but also resonated deeply with Mirković’s ideas, especially in interpreting “Triptiha.”
The exceptional performances by soloists, coupled with the well-prepared choir, under the guidance of conductors Ana Ćosović and Bojan Stojčević, culminated in a monumental, epic auditory experience. The concert’s contrasts between dramatic and lyrical elements, interspersed with whispers of prayer and oriental arabesques, culminated in a powerful and triumphant finale. This evening was a testament to the strength and triumph of the human spirit over the trials of transience.
The concert not only celebrated the rich cultural heritage of Montenegro but also reinforced the significant contributions of its artists, ensuring that the legacy of Žarko Mirković and the Muzički centar Crne Gore continues to resonate in the hearts of many.
