Bosnian Cultural Project Launched to Preserve Heritage in Bijelo Polje

A significant cultural initiative titled “Bosniak Sehara” was launched today at the Cultural Centre in Bijelo Polje, Montenegro. This project aims to preserve and promote the cultural heritage of the Bosniak people in the region. During a well-attended gathering, the focus was placed on safeguarding traditional artifacts, values, and everyday customs that shape the community’s identity.

The project addresses the growing concern of losing cultural elements, especially in rural areas where authentic items and ways of life are often overshadowed by contemporary lifestyles. According to Aisha Mujanović, the project coordinator, the primary goal is to ensure that the values of the past are preserved and transmitted to future generations through tangible and visually appealing means.

Documenting Cultural Heritage

As part of the initiative, Mujanović announced the creation of an album dedicated to Bosniak culture. This album will feature photographs and descriptions of traditional items, clothing, tools, and crafts that constituted the daily lives of Bosniak families. Mujanović stated, “The aim is to not only document the material traces of culture but also to evoke a sense of belonging and pride among younger generations.”

The significance of the project was also highlighted by Edin Smailović, the director of the Cultural Centre, and Kemal Mujić, director of the JU “Ratković Evenings of Poetry.” Their remarks underscored the importance of cultural preservation in maintaining community identity and cohesion in the face of modern challenges.

The “Bosniak Sehara” project has garnered support from the Montenegrin Fund for the Protection and Realization of Minority Rights for the year 2025. This backing is crucial for the successful implementation of the various initiatives planned under this project.

Understanding the Bosniak Sehara

The term “Sehara” refers to a wooden chest or box that, in historical contexts, was used to store valuables, money, jewelry, and a girl’s dowry, often adorned with ornaments, fabric, and metal fittings. This item held an important place in homes, frequently positioned to receive sunlight. By reviving the significance of the Sehara, the project aims to reconnect the community with its historical roots.
