Modern Emergency Unit Opens in Rožaje, Enhancing Healthcare
A new, fully equipped emergency medical unit has officially opened in Rožaje, significantly modernizing healthcare services in the region. The upgrade transforms a previously deteriorated facility into a contemporary healthcare station that meets European Union standards, according to a statement from the Ministry of Health.
The renovation of the emergency unit involved an investment of €66,120 from the capital budget, excluding VAT, along with an additional €34,000 for the purchase of medical equipment. The Emergency Medical Institute also funded a video laryngoscope valued at €2,000. Key officials present at the inauguration included Dr. Vojislav Šimun, Minister of Health, Dr. Vuk Niković, Director of the Emergency Medical Institute, and Dr. Miloš Šaponjić, Assistant Director.
During the opening ceremony, Minister Šimun emphasized the importance of the new unit for the citizens of Rožaje, stating, “This is a special day for the residents, who now have access to quicker, more efficient, and safer healthcare in emergency situations.” He noted that the newly renovated facility features a triage point, an examination room, observation areas, and storage for medications and medical supplies. The unit will be staffed by two doctors and 15 medical technicians.
The state-of-the-art facility is equipped with the latest medical technology. Plans are underway to introduce protocols for home visits and to connect with all 24 emergency medical units across Montenegro. The minister highlighted that this is the 18th adapted emergency medical unit in the country, part of a broader project by the Ministry of Health aimed at upgrading emergency services nationwide.
“We are launching this 18th renovated emergency medical unit as part of a unified, technically advanced system that encompasses 24 emergency medical units across Montenegro. Our goal is to have 20 renovated and integrated units by the end of this year,” Šimun explained. The adapted units will implement telemedicine, integrate EKG devices, and enhance diagnostics through laboratory and ultrasound capabilities. Additionally, a triage system for patient intake will be established alongside a call center for emergencies.
Minister Šimun reiterated the commitment to continuing investment in the healthcare system, not only in Rožaje but also throughout the northern region. The total value of capital projects specifically for the Health Center of Rožaje is approximately €260,000, with proposals already submitted to the Ministry of Public Works for execution.
As part of ongoing efforts, additional improvements include the adaptation of children’s and women’s health dispensaries, with a planned acquisition of a mammography device valued at over €100,000 to enhance preventive care and women’s health services. Furthermore, a credit arrangement for the Health Center of Rožaje includes a budget of €90,000 for necessary medical equipment.
Dr. Vuk Niković highlighted the significance of enhancing conditions in healthcare facilities, emphasizing the Emergency Medical Institute’s dedication to ensuring all emergency units from north to south Montenegro are well-equipped and accessible. “The idea is to create an environment in a system that has been neglected for years. We aim to reach European Union standards and become leaders in the region regarding the organization of emergency services,” he stated.
Looking ahead, Dr. Niković announced that two more modern and fully equipped emergency units will be opened in Montenegro by the end of the year, further strengthening the nation’s healthcare infrastructure.
