Italy’s Foreign Minister, Antonio Tajani, emphasized the importance of prioritizing the Balkan countries for membership in the European Union (EU). Speaking to the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, Tajani made it clear that while Italy supports Ukraine’s bid for EU membership, the focus must remain on the Balkan nations, which he described as having “certain obligations” from EU member states.

Tajani stated, “We support Ukraine’s accession to the European Union, but the Balkans come first.” This statement reflects a growing sentiment within the EU that acknowledges the unique historical and political commitments the bloc has towards the Balkans.

The foreign minister further asserted that Ukraine will continue to receive support on its path towards EU membership. He believes that “Kyiv must follow its own journey towards EU membership,” reinforcing the idea that each candidate country has its own unique path and timeline.

In contrast, Friedrich Merz, the German Chancellor, has expressed skepticism regarding the speed of Ukraine’s integration into the EU. He indicated that he does not foresee any possibility of Ukraine joining the EU in the near future, explicitly ruling out membership by 2027. This perspective has been echoed by officials from Hungary, Poland, and Austria, suggesting a consensus on the need for caution in expanding EU membership.

Currently, several countries in the Balkans, including Montenegro, Serbia, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and North Macedonia, hold official candidate status for EU membership. Additionally, countries such as Georgia and Moldova are also in the process of pursuing EU candidacy.

The discussion around EU membership reflects broader geopolitical dynamics, especially as the EU grapples with its role in regional stability and international relations. As the situation evolves, the commitment to the Balkans remains a critical focus for Italy and other EU member states.
