High-Profile Prosecutors Skip Key Hearing on Telekom Case

A scheduled hearing on the controversial Telekom case faced a significant setback as key figures from the prosecution failed to attend. The hearing, intended to assess the actions of the prosecution that led to the dismissal of criminal charges related to abuse of office, bribery, and the establishment of a criminal organization during the sale of the former state enterprise Telekom, took place without the participation of the Chief State Prosecutor Milorad Marković, Special Prosecutor Vladimir Novović, and Prosecutor Ana Perović Vojinović.

The hearing was organized by the Committee for Political System, Justice, and Administration, following an initiative put forward by lawmakers from the Europe Now Movement, including Vasilije Čarapić, Darko Dragović, and Dražen Petrić. The absence of these officials prompted criticism from several members of parliament, highlighting a perceived lack of accountability within the prosecution.

Nikola Zirojević, a member of parliament, expressed frustration, stating, “It is obvious that nobody wanted to participate in this circus.” He added, “It is shameful that this Committee did not receive any notification from the three individuals invited to this session, who hold serious positions.” Zirojević’s remarks underscore a growing discontent regarding the prosecution’s reluctance to engage with legislative oversight.

Jovan Vučurović from the New Serbian Democracy party noted that the absence of the prosecutors was “at least inappropriate,” suggesting it reflects their disregard for parliament and its members. He emphasized that the ongoing Telekom scandal, which has now reportedly reached the statute of limitations, warrants serious attention.

Another lawmaker, Andrija Nikolić, pointedly remarked on the implications of granting extensive powers to the prosecution. “When you give the prosecution such power, as you have as the parliamentary majority, it is logical for them to assess that they need not respond to the Assembly,” he stated, highlighting the responsibility shared between the parliamentary majority and the prosecutorial organization.
