Montenegro’s EU Membership Targeted for 2028 Under New Government
Montenegro’s anticipated accession to the European Union is projected to occur during the 45th Government, led by Milojko Spajić. Vasilije Čarapić, head of the parliamentary group for the Party of European Socialists (PES), made this announcement, emphasizing that realistic timelines place EU membership as early as 2028.
In a discussion regarding Montenegro’s EU aspirations, Čarapić noted that the next elections are set for 2027, aligning with the timeline for formal accession. He stated, “The accession agreement for Montenegro will be signed by Milojko Spajić in this term.” This assertion suggests a strong belief in the government’s capability to navigate the final stages of the EU integration process.
Čarapić’s comments followed an interview with Zlatko Vujović, who had previously expressed skepticism about the government completing negotiations by the end of 2026. Čarapić characterized Vujović’s remarks as a shift in political rhetoric, highlighting a move from doubt about the government’s ability to finalize negotiations to a more adaptable narrative that acknowledges the possibility of completing talks but questions the government’s capacity to fully integrate Montenegro into the EU.
The shift in tone reflects the evolving political landscape in Montenegro as it seeks clarity and direction regarding its EU membership ambitions. The prospect of formal negotiations being concluded by 2026 now appears more feasible to some, with Čarapić advocating for a proactive approach under the expected leadership of Spajić.
With the EU membership process being a critical component for Montenegro’s future, the upcoming elections will play a significant role in shaping the government that will lead these negotiations. The outcome of these elections will not only determine the political landscape but also the pace at which Montenegro can advance its EU aspirations.
In summary, Montenegro’s path to EU membership hinges on the actions of the 45th Government, with key figures like Milojko Spajić expected to drive the process forward. The timeline presented by Čarapić suggests a deliberate strategy aimed at enhancing the country’s prospects for integration into the European Union by the targeted year of 2028.
