Carlos Mendes Gomes Triumphs Over Injury to Boost Exeter City
Carlos Mendes Gomes has made a significant return to the pitch after overcoming a lengthy injury setback that sidelined him for more than four months. The 27-year-old winger joined Exeter City on a season-long loan from Bolton Wanderers on September 1, 2023, just before the transfer deadline. He made his debut as a substitute against Rotherham United, but shortly thereafter suffered an abductor muscle injury during training that required surgery.
Initially expected to be out for three months, Mendes Gomes’ recovery extended beyond that timeline, leading to a period where he became almost a forgotten figure at the club. After his return in December, he has yet to start a match for manager Gary Caldwell but has made an impact with impressive performances off the bench.
Reflecting on his challenging recovery, Mendes Gomes stated, “It wasn’t easy. As soon as I knew the severity, I had to set my mind right as there was nothing I could do at that point.” He spent the early weeks away from training, finding support in family life before beginning the rigorous gym work necessary to regain his fitness.
The player emphasized the importance of his family during his recovery. “A few weeks staying at home with family helped me. Once I was in the gym, it was all about getting back as soon as possible. It’s been a long journey; I had to do a lot of gym work to make sure I got my body right,” he noted. Mendes Gomes acknowledged his previous experiences with injuries, stating, “I knew the journey wasn’t going to be easy, but I’m glad I’ve overcome that and I’m here now.”
As he rejoins an Exeter side that has recently found its rhythm, Mendes Gomes looks to contribute to their success. The team has secured three wins from their last four matches over the festive period and currently sits in 15th place in League One, just five points above the relegation zone. The club’s defensive record is notable, with only one team conceding fewer goals than the Grecians.
With a crucial match against Huddersfield on the horizon, Mendes Gomes is determined to maintain the team’s momentum. “We are on a great run and want to take that momentum to Huddersfield,” he remarked. “We have a brilliant squad and can do something special. It’s all about sticking together.”
He expressed eagerness to return to the starting eleven, adding, “As a player, you want to play every game. Hopefully, I can be in the starting eleven and show everyone what I can do. I’m just glad to be back helping the boys. That was my main focus.”
As Exeter City prepares for a demanding schedule, Mendes Gomes’ return will be pivotal as they aim to build on their recent success and continue climbing the league standings.
